Neuer fractures foot as Bayern lose to Madrid

Ronaldo was standing in an offside position when he fired in Madrid's second - and then Bayern crumbled.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a controversial hat-trick to become the first man to reach 100 Champions League goals as Real Madrid overcame 10-man Bayern Munich 4-2 after extra time in Tuesday's, April 18 (Wednesday in Manila) thrilling quarterfinal second leg.

The Germans had to head into extra-time with only 10 men following a second caution for midfielder Arturo Vidal, which looked harsh on the Chile worldwide.

The defending champions led 2-1 from the away first leg, but lost 1-2 for a 3-3 aggregate at full time in the home second leg before Ronaldo's intervention.

It was a night to forget for the match officials who made errors on at least a handful of incidents at the Santiago Bernabeu which essentially cost Bayern the tie.

"To score 6 goals against a team like Bayern Munich isn't easy so we deserved to go through", the Portuguese striker told Spanish TV station Antena 3. "The second yellow for Arturo should not have been a card, and Ronaldo had two goals when he was offside". "I believe we played very well. It's time to introduce videos for the referees". But Carlo Ancelotti's side started to cut through the Real defence, with Arjen Robben finding the side-netting and Arturo Vidal firing just over from distance.

Madrid began to find their feet and were soon dominating, with the effervescent Marcelo key in both attack and defence.

Ramos almost put the hosts ahead after the otherwise superb Manuel Neuer spilled a shot, but Jerome Boateng somehow blocked his effort on the line to keep his side in the tie.

Real Madrid hosted Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu tonight, and came into the game holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg.

Madrid added two more late on, Ronaldo appearing fractionally offside again for their third of the night, leaving Bayern exhausted and angry.

"In the big moments, Ronaldo always comes through", Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said. "He provides his answers out on the pitch and he has scored five goals in two games".

"We had a lot of chances".
