NORC Poll: Most disapprove of Trump, except on economy

More than 30 percent of Americans gave Trump an "F" grade for his job performance during his first two months in office.

The president, who has fared poorly in several approval rating polls of late, was given the low grade by 32% of respondents in a recent survey from McClatchy-Marist.

Overall, just 42pc of Americans approve and 58pc disapprove of the job Mr Trump is doing as president - an unusually poor rating by historical standards for a still-young administration.

But with Trump in the White House, Milton is so disappointed that she said she would take former President George W. Bush, who started two major wars that have killed more than 200,000 people and presided over one of the biggest economic recessions in US history.

But the poll also found a brighter spot for the businessman-politician on the economy, often a major driver of presidential success or failure.

But the poll suggests Trump may find it hard to step past health care. There, Americans split about evenly, with 50 percent approving and 48 percent disapproving of Trump's efforts. For independents, 68 percent hold the same view, including 54 percent who said the law should be expanded to do more.

The director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion in New York Lee Miringoff explained Trump's support from Republicans was faltering - describing this as a unsafe sign for the president. The amount of people who said they approved and disapproved were nearly the same as those for the people said they held favorable and unfavorable opinions of Trump. But most oppose surcharges for people who did not previously have coverage (59 percent) and allowing insurers to charge older Americans more than they can now (74 percent).

The poll, conducted over five days preceding and following last Friday's collapse of the GOP healthcare bill, suggests the political damage could be hard for Mr Trump to leave behind even if the economy stays strong. More than three-quarters of Democrats favor an independent investigation while only one-quarter of Republicans do. "I want him to have a little bit tougher skin".

- More than 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of health care, the worst of seven issues tested in the poll. But among Republicans, almost two-thirds think it's heading in the right direction.

The AP-NORC poll of 1,110 adults was conducted March 23-27 using a sample drawn from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak panel, which is created to be representative of the US population. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish.
