North Korea Shows Off Missiles During Military Parade

North Korea unveiled what appears to be launch tubes for a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during a military parade in the capital of Pyongyang to celebrate the 105th birthday of the country's late founder Kim Il Sung, South Korea's military said Saturday.

In response, the general staff of the North Korean armed forces threatened to launch a strike against U.S. military bases in Japan and South Korea, as well as the presidential residence in Seoul in case of United States aggression.

Rows of military bands and goose-stepping and sword-wielding soldiers marched through Pyongyang's main Kim Il-sung square for the "Day of the Sun" celebrations, as a black-suited Kim Jong-un watched.

Britain said it was "concerned" by reports that North Korea conducted a missile test on Sunday, which the US Defence Department said blew up nearly immediately.

However, experts were still analysing features of this new projectile, which could yet turn out to be just a model, as North Korea is known to present mock-ups of missiles that are still under development.

North Korea conducted two of such tests previous year alone, which analysts say would have taken the country a step forward in gaining the knowledge to make nuclear weapons small enough to fit on long-range missiles.

A USA military official, who requested anonymity to discuss planning, said the United States doesn't intend to use military force against North Korea in response to either a nuclear test or a missile launch.

In a separate appearance on the Fox Business Network, Trump said that the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un was "doing the wrong thing".

China is North Korea's lone major ally, but has spoken out against its missile and nuclear tests and has supported United Nations sanctions.

The secretive state has vowed to "pulverise" U.S. bases and the South Korean capital Seoul if threatened by the USA military, which is now carrying out drills near the Korean peninsula.

China warned on Friday that tensions on the Korean Peninsula could spin out of control, as North Korea said it could test a nuclear weapon at any time and an American naval group neared the peninsula in a show of resolve.

Weapons analysts said they believe some of the missiles on display were new types of intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, including a solid-fuel missile created to be fired from a submarine, which would make it hard to detect.

Other senior officials joining Kim at the podium included Kim Won Hong, who the South Korean government had said earlier this year was sacked from his job as state security minister, presumably over corruption. But there had been fears that the isolated country would mark the Day of the Sun by conducting a nuclear test - in defiance of US warnings not to.

North Korea yesterday denounced the United States for bringing "huge nuclear strategic assets" to the region as the USS Carl Vinson strike group with a flagship nuclear-powered aircraft carrier steamed closer.

He said that the North is also likely developing solid-fuel ICBMs, and that some of the rockets paraded inside canisters on Saturday might be prototypes.

North Korea warned the United States to end its "military hysteria" earlier on Saturday or face retaliation as a U.S. aircraft carrier group steamed towards the region.

The reports surfaced while the biggest ever joint military exercises between the US and South Korea are still ongoing.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry said North Korea's willingness to go to war reveals the "true colors of North Korea's government that is bellicose and a breaker of regulations".

Trump has repeatedly said he will prevent Pyongyang from its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of reaching the mainland United States.
