Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey departs Facebook

Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey departs Facebook

Facebook representatives declined to offer comments regarding the reason behind Luckey's departure, but several major incidents within the past six months may well be the motivation.

Luckey started his VR concern along with former gaming executives John Carmack and Brendan Iribe.

Facebook's virtual reality arm, Oculus, has seen some legal hurdles in 2017.

Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014 for more than $2 billion and past year began selling the Rift headsets as part of the social network's push into virtual reality. Facebook acquired Oculus for $2bn in 2014.

Luckey went on to apologize for his affiliation with the group, owning up to the fact that he had donated $10,000 for its billboards but denying some other charges.

Palmer is considered as the poster child of VR.

The troubles first began for Luckey back in September 2016 when it was discovered that he was linked to a far-right online political group that campaigned against Hilary Clinton in the run-up to the United States election. He funded a group called Nimble America to post degrading news about Hillary Clinton online. Facebook wasn't impressed too.

Just why the original founder of Oculus left Facebook remains unclear, with Luckey yet to make any public statement on the matter.

Luckey later apologised for his actions that might negatively impact the perception of Oculus and apologised. A jury agreed, and awarded the company $500 million in February.

Luckey wasn't a part of the Annual Virtual reality Conference that took place in October.

Facebook announced in January that it had recruited Hugo Barra - who recently quit a top position with Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi - as its new head of virtual reality.

His departure was confirmed to UploadVR in a statement by Oculus. ZeniMax brought suit against both Facebook and Luckey for theft of intellectual property and disseminating a false origin story for the Rift as entirely Luckey's invention - the Oculus, ZeniMax claimed, was based on its software.

It said that his "inventive spirit" helped to "kickstart" recent interest in VR and get the industry going.
