Pakistan has to shun terror for friendship: PM Narendra Modi

The high-profile visit is expected to boost bilateral ties between Indian and Bangladesh as the two nations signed a civilian nuclear cooperation pact as well as a defence agreement that includes a United States dollars 4.5 billion line of credit to buy Indian military hardware.

The two Prime Ministers, according to the joint statement "also directed concerned officials to meanwhile conclude discussions on various aspects relating to sharing of waters of the Feni, Manu, Muhuri, Khowai, Gumti, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers". Stressing that the deal was "important" for India-Bangladesh ties, Modi assured India's commitment to the issue.

In a bid to find a solution to the logjam over sharing the Teesta's waters, the Mamata Banerjee government is learnt to have made a counter-proposal to the Centre: why focus on the Teesta system alone, "water could be obtained from other river systems", too.

Referring to the Teesta issue, Modi said the pact is important for India-Bangladesh relationship and expressed hope that the West Bengal chief minister will eventually support it.

Teesta water is crucial for Bangladesh especially in the leanest period from December to March when the water flow often temporarily comes down to less than 1,000 cusecs from 5,000 cusecs.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister also announced the grant of an additional 10 thousand scholarships for the wards of liberation war heroes over the next five years. "The thought whose priority is not humanity, but extremism and terrorism", Modi said, without naming the neighbouring country.

A new bus and train services were also launched between Kolkata and Khulna in Bangladesh. He said that 17 projects have been identified for utilisation of the new line of credit. "There is a mentality in South Asia opposed to the approach of India and Bangladesh to promote development". We are encouraging private sectors in both our countries to enter this space.

Explaining the military Line of Credit extended by India, Bangladeshi foreign secretary Shahidul Haq said, "The line of credit for military procurement is friendly, flexible and liberal and we are not bound to use it to source our supplies only from Indian companies".

The Bangladesh Prime Minister arrived here on Friday on a four-day visit to India. After receiving Sheikh Hasina, PM Modi also interacted with the Bangladesh delegation.

The long 62-point joint declaration released after the talks notes "Prime Minister Modi reiterated that his Government is working with all stakeholders in India for an early conclusion of the Agreement". The second one was signed between the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) of India and its Bangladeshi equal Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA), which calls for exchange of technical cooperation and sharing of information in the field of nuclear safety and radiation protection. Modi added that India's doors were always open for cooperation, but for this terrorism had to be shunned.
