Putin told Tillerson why US-Russian ties in bad state

Tillerson reiterated the U.S. belief that Assad ordered the attack, though he stepped back from the United States charge that Russia was covering up Assad's culpability."With respect to Russia's complicity or knowledge of the chemical weapons attack, we have no firm information to indicate that there was any involvement by Russia, Russian forces into this attack", he said.

Witnesses said they saw warplanes attack the town but Russian Federation says a rebel depot of chemical munitions was hit.

Trump, meanwhile, told Fox Business News that the US had no plans to become more deeply involved in Syria and only did so because of last week's deadly chemical weapons attack that killed dozens.

Assad even cast doubt on whether the victims were actually dead.

Any investigation would have to be impartial, Mr Assad said, adding: "When we make sure that unbiased countries will participate in this delegation in order to make sure that they won't use it for politicised purposes". "Russian Federation now has a lot to prove", U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said. "We know the ending of it way too well". "Were they dead at all?"

The U.S. cruise-missile attack on a Syrian air base last week escalated tensions in the Syrian conflict, Lavrov said. Trump appears to have embraced the fact that, like it or not, the US can no longer "lead from behind".

"Our firepower, our ability to attack the terrorists hasn't been affected by this strike", he said.

It was the first direct USA military action against Assad's forces since the start of Syria's civil war six years ago and led to a quick downward spiral in ties between Washington and Moscow.

U.S. Central Command said Thursday that coalition aircraft were given the wrong coordinates by their partner forces, the predominantly-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces, for a strike meant to target Islamic State militants south of their Tabqa stronghold.

Trump, who was meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on April 12, reacted to the Moscow talks. "Right now we are not getting along". We may be at an all-time low in terms of a relationship with Russian Federation.

Then there is the detailed narrative, provided by the Americans who tracked the aircraft they say launched the attack, from its base, to the target location, and then home again.

Any additional use of USA military force in an attempt to bring the Syrian conflict to a peaceful resolution should be viewed with serious skepticism before we commit ourselves to another fruitless, decades-long insurgent war in the region.

Russian-U.S. relations are now in a very poor state, Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted shortly before talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Moscow.

After the highest-level face-to-face talks between the two under President Donald Trump's administration, officials said both sides cautiously backed efforts to improve ties that were at "an all-time low". Secretary Tillerson told President Putin peace can not happen in Syria while Assad is still in power.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov agreed there were many problems, but stressed that Moscow was "open to dialogue with the U.S.in all different areas".

Russia, a close ally of Syria, on Wednesday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution which sought to condemn the killings and call on the Assad regime to cooperate with an worldwide investigation into the attack.

The NATO campaign proceeded without United Nations' authorization after Russian Federation and China said they would veto any Security Council resolution authorizing such intervention. This time China abstained.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during an interview with AFP in the capital Damascus. They were saying that ISIS doesn't have chemical weapons. The United States and other Western governments blame Assad's regime.
