Rep. Jason Chaffetz will not seek re-election in 2018

Arun Jaitley Raises H-1B Visa Issue With US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross Told No Decision Yet

The Utah Republican, who's been in Congress since 2009, confirmed the decision on Facebook.

Kathryn Allen is actively fundraising for the Democratic nomination and took time on Wednesday to celebrate his announcement.

After Chaffetz announced he would not seek reelection in 2018, Watson directed her Twitter followers to a tweet from Louise Mensch that said her "sources" told her there was compromising material, or "kompromat", on the Utah congressman. Chaffetz was raised Jewish and had campaigned for Democrat Michael Dukakis in the 1988 presidential campaign.

Chaffetz is going into the private sector to earn some big bucks.

"I have no doubt the 3rd Congressional District will be represented by a Republican".

"He has served with distinction during his four terms in the House of Representatives, and has become a good friend and colleague".

Cox, a resident of the part of Sanpete County that falls in the 4th Congressional District, also declined to commit to a gubernatorial run - a bid Chaffetz hasn't ruled out either.

"I have no ulterior motives". "I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins", he said in a statement (and a Trumpian one at that, to declare that you're not running, but would have won if you had).

The media-friendly Republican, who assumed leadership of the powerful Oversight Committee in 2015, led investigations into Planned Parenthood and Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

Chaffetz told the station he will get a job in the private sector, but didn't say what that would be.

Again, fair enough. But if you had to say it...

Because of the GOP's 11 commandment, "thou shalt not speak ill of any Republican", that would mean a serious no-win situation for the lawmaker.

His first request to the Trump White House came in mid-February, when he asked the White House for information about security at Mar-a-Lago after Trump pored over documents related to North Korea on the club's outdoor terrace.

Chaffetz's decision is likely awful news for Allen and the Democrats, as the district is normally not a competitive opportunity.

There had previously been speculation that Chaffetz might run for Senate or governor of Utah.

In early February, he scrapped legislation to sell 3.3 million acres of federal land after a backlash from hunters and outdoors groups. "We can't investigate everything all the time".

On the right, conservative independent Evan McMullin, who pulled in 22 percent of the vote in Utah as an independent candidate for president in 2016, suggested in March that he might be interested in challenging Chaffetz.

"There's no question getting out of Congress, shedding the Trump baggage and coming back here and shoring up support for what could be a hard 2020 primary is really the best option", Gehrke concluded. And maybe he knows something we don't.
