Russia, Iran and Syria issue warning to US

15 de abril de 2017, 11:26Moscow, Apr 15 (Prensa Latina) As more clarity is demanded in the investigation into what happened in the Syrian province of Idlib, the West gets more nervous, above all, after the discussions here at a meeting among the foreign ministers from Syria, Iran and Russian Federation.

While Lavrov, who met with his Iranian and Syrian counterparts Friday, called for an "independent investigation", Russian Federation vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution on Wednesday that demanded the Syrian government cooperate with an inquiry into the suspected sarin-gas attack that killed dozens of people.

Lavrov said the investigation should also be widened to include experts from many nations.

"We insist on conducting a meticulous, objective and unbiased investigation into the alleged chemical weapon attack by Syrian aircraft on April 4", Lavrov said at a joint conference after talks with his Iranian and Syrian counterparts, Mohammad Javad Zarif and Walid al-Muallem, respectively.

With the West lashing out at the Syrian government of carrying out the alleged chemical attack in Syria's Idlib province on April, Trump has joined the chorus and blamed the current situation in Syria on Moscow's support of Assad and called the Syrian leader "an animal".

The attack, which US officials believe took place with the knowledge of high-ranking Syrian government officials, prompted Trump to launch the USA military's first direct assault on an Assad-linked target since Syria's war began six years ago.

"The Astana negotiations won't be influenced by the recent USA intervention in Syria", Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi told the Tehran Times on Monday. The Kremlin contended the chemicals were under the control of terrorists, while Lavrov said Friday he sees "growing evidence" that the incident was staged.

The OPCW said Thursday that a fact-finding mission was analysing samples gathered from "various sources" and that allegations a chemical attack took place in the Syrian rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun were "credible".

"The negotiations pave the way for a more rational approach to the crisis", he added, emphasizing that there is no military solution to the war, which has now dragged on for seven years.

This Wednesday Russia vetoed a Western draft United Nations resolution claiming it did not mention the necessity for an inspection of the attacked area.

Tillerson, visiting Moscow on Wednesday, addressed the issue of the chemical weapons attack but he stopped short of calling it a war crime. The U.S. says it has images proving the bomb left a crater in a road rather than hitting a building.

Lavrov met earlier this week with his USA counterpart Rex Tillerson in Moscow for talks that also focused on the Syrian conflict.

Lavrov said the US strike on the Syrian base has undermined peace efforts in Syria and reflected Washington's focus on ousting Syrian President Bashar Assad's government.
