Sergio Garcia Wins The Masters, Ends Drought At The Majors

Sergio Garcia Wins The Masters, Ends Drought At The Majors

And in 2017, the Masters delivered once again.

"It's been such a long time coming", said Garcia, who missed a five-foot putt for the win at the end of regulation before rolling in a 12-foot birdie to claim victory on the first extra hole.

In his 71st major as a professional, things looked grim for Garcia when he missed a 5-foot birdie late. With it, he shook off almost two decades of weighted expectations by capturing the 81st Masters Tournament.

Turning serious, Garcia said, "Because where my head was at sometimes, I did think, 'Am I ever going to win one?".

"But it's happened", he said. Fowler has been floating around the top 10 in majors for a while and does have a Players Championship to his credit.

"I would say this one probably is one that slipped by, for sure", Rose said. I still have a bunch of good years in me and this is one I hope I can knock off. "But I can live with that". Ballesteros was Garcia's childhood golfing hero, and Garcia had to answer questions all week about what it might mean to win the tournament on Ballesteros' birthday.

Rose was looking for another major title to go with the U.S. Open he won at Merion in 2013. Rose, a popular figure in the game, gained more admirers as a gracious runner-up. "If there was anyone to lose to it would be Sergio. He deserves it. He's had his share of heartbreak".

But of the four traditional majors, he's come up just short several times.

So, both competitors stood nine under par, dead even, as they played the 72nd hole of the tournament.

Rose bunkered his second shot on No. 17 and couldn't save par.

Kuchar, 38, played in his 45th major and has eight top-10 finishes and three top-5 finishes, including his tie for fourth on Sunday.

The pairing did not take long to make things exciting, as Garcia birdied two of the first three holes, separating himself from Rose nearly immediately.

That set the stage for 18.

The momentum had shifted and Garcia took full advantage, curling in a six-foot birdie putt at the 14th although Rose parred to stay one ahead.

But Rose is also rightly taking some positives, none more so than he is playing some of the best golf his career right now.

"I don't know if it hasn't sunk in or something but it doesn't feel that different", he said.

However, he started to encounter trouble on the back nine - at the same time that Rose began to find his rhythm on the greens - and when Garcia sent his tee shot into the trees on the 13th, Rose had his chance to open up what could have been an unassailable advantage. Not enough of a kick, however, and he could only bunt the ball down the fairway and then wedge to 15 feet.

Rose, 36, held a two-shot lead over Garcia standing on the 14th tee but was clawed back to level two holes later when the Spaniard surged with a birdie at 14 and stunning eagle at 15.

On his 74th attempt to win a major championship, Garcia made a long putt in the 19 hole - a tie-breaker - to finally win his first one.

"What a moment", Garcia said during a second green-jacket ceremony, away from the network cameras and in front of members and fans behind the clubhouse. "It's been a long, long wait, but it's that much sweeter because of that wait".
