Sindhu unleashes attacking game to outplay Marin, wins India Open

LIVE India Open Super Series semi-final PV Sindhu vs Sung Ji-hyun – Indian shuttler grabs first game 21-18

Rio Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu produced a superlative performance beating reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain 21-19 21-16 to win her maiden India Open Super Series title, here today.

Third seed PV Sindhu takes on top seed Carolina Marin in the Women's singles final of 2017 India Open Superseries in New Delhi on Sunday. The win gave Sindhu her first India Open title and second Superseries title after the China Open a year ago. The Spaniard managed to save one match point but Sindhu sealed it on the very next point when Marin found the net again. "There were no easy points, there were long rallies", Sindhu said after winning the title.

"From there she lead 11-6 and I tried, but she maintained the lead and finished it off", Sindhu said. None of this mattered to the capacity crowd, of course, who were cheering Sindhu in what they saw as a grudge match for the Olympic loss. The most notable clash being the Rio Olympics, where Marin beat her to win the top gong at the quadrennial event. While, SIndhu, considering her recent form, will start the clash as favourite, Marin, with her never-say-die attitude, can be unsafe. Sindhu clinched the first game, but her Korean rival fought back to win the second.

Sindhu then upped the ante and then pushed Marin into all corners.

Meanwhile, two-time World Champion Carolina defeated Japan's Akane Yamaguchi, seeded fourth, 21-16 21-14 in an one-sided contest to reach the final.

"Talking about Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who recently won their fifth global challenger title at Vietnam Open, Gopichand said: ".they are just 18 and 19 years old and they are doing well for this age.

Spaniard Marin won against Japanese Minatsu Mitani 21-10, 20-22, 21-14 to set-up a clash against another Japanese.

Her defence stood out against Sung as she picked up the shuttle from every corner, be it lunging forward to lift the spinning net shots or rocking back to the back court to hit the overheads. Sindhu, however, had a two points lead, 11-9, going into the break, and the match was set to be a thriller.

In mixed doubles, second seeded Chinese Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong thrashed Husband-wife English duo of Chris Adcock and Gabrielle Adcock 21-13 21-13.
