Stockholm attack suspect sympathetic to Islamic State, police say

The truck rammed into a Swedish department store

Police now say one British person, two Belgians and two Swedes were killed in the attack in a busy shopping district of the Swedish capital.

Under sunny spring skies, crowds thronged the Sergels Torg plaza, a stone's throw from where a stolen truck mowed down strolling shoppers before slamming into the facade of the bustling Ahlens department store on Friday afternoon.

Stockholm authorities said that ten of the injured people are still in hospital, and two of them are in intensive care.

"I really feel ashamed [of] that man, because this country give him everything, this country give him peace", she said of the Uzbek suspect.

"He wasn't at the address given [to authorities]", police said at a press conference.

In 2014, the suspect had applied for residency but it was rejected in December past year, another police spokesman, Jan Evensson, told reporters. "The Migration Agency rejected it in June 2016 and also decided that he was to be expelled", Hysing said.

Sweden has been trying to get back on its feet this weekend after what authorities termed a terror attack, the motive for which was still unknown.

Swedish Prosecution Authority spokeswoman Karin Rosander said a second person has been arrested in connection with the attack and is suspected of terrorist offences, including murder.

Akilov was detained on Friday night in a northern Stockholm suburb hours after police say he carried out the attack.

Police are holding a 39-year-old Uzbek man who they believe was the driver of the hijacked beer truck that crashed into a department store, leaving death in its wake.

Swedish police spokesman Jan Evensson said: "All four deceased are now identified and family to the deceased are notified".

Another was Belgian, and two more were Swedish citizens.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven described Friday's incident as a terrorist attack, and asked for tightening of the borders.

Vehicles have also been used as weapons in Nice and Berlin in the past year in attacks claimed by Islamic State militants. Those attacks were claimed by Islamic State, but there has been no such claim yet for the Stockholm assault.

Security officials in neighboring Norway, where a 17-year-old asylum-seeker from Russian Federation was detained early Sunday in connection with an explosive device found near a busy subway station, spoke of the alarming potential for a copycat effect.

A homemade bomb placed in a bag was found in the truck, which was suspected to have failed to be detonated during the attack, Swedish Television (SVT) reported Saturday, quoting sources.

The country has a long record of liberalism and has been historically welcoming to migrants and refugees. But some Swedes are having second thoughts after more than 160,000 people, many from Syria, applied for asylum in 2015 in a nation of just 10 million.
