Syria army 'categorically denies' chemical attack

BEIRUT (AP) - Chemical weapons have killed hundreds of people since the start of Syria's civil war, with the United Nations blaming three attacks on the Syrian government and a fourth on the Islamic State group.

The New York Times calls it the "deadliest chemical weapons attack in years in Syria".

Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the use of chemical weapons and echoed Johnson.

Under the deal, Syria agreed to give up its toxic arsenal and surrendered 1,300 tonnes of toxic weapons and industrial chemicals to the worldwide community for destruction.

"President Obama said in 2012 he would establish a red line against the use of chemical weapons and then did nothing", Spicer said.

Airstrikes launched by the Syrian government over the city of Khan Sheikhoun released a poisonous gas that choked civilians, according to the BBC. A United Nations investigation later finds that sarin nerve gas was used, but does not identify a culprit.

Videos circulating on social media purporting to be from the scene show people, including children, who appear unresponsive; others are seen struggling to breathe or wearing oxygen masks.

Pinpoint pupils, breathing difficulties and foaming at the mouth are symptoms commonly associated with toxic gas exposure.

The European Union's top diplomat Federica Mogherini said: "Obviously there is a primary responsibility from the regime because it has the primary responsibility of protecting its people".

The incident brought swift worldwide condemnation, with France and Britain demanding an emergency UN Security Council meeting and President Francois Hollande denouncing a "massacre". The Security Council threatens to authorize the use of force in the event of non-compliance.

The Syrian military source on Tuesday denied allegations that government forces had used chemical weapons.

Both France and Britain have called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council in addition and the group is now expected to meet on Wednesday. Chlorine gas, though not as toxic as nerve agents, can be classified as a chemical weapon depending on its use.

The nature of the substance used in the attack has not been officially confirmed, and it is unclear whether the planes involved were Syrian.

It held rebels responsible, saying they attacked their own territory in order to distract from their losses across the country. We issued reports on these attacks in May 2014, April 2015, June 2015, and September 2016.

The doctor, who can not be named for security reasons, said tests were needed to identify whether sarin gas was to blame.

Syria's peace talks got off to a rocky start yesterday when rebel groups refused to meet President Bashar al-Assad's government and a war of words broke out between the two sides.

Mr Rycroft said an emergency council meeting would "shine a spotlight on the heinous use of chemical weapons yet again" in Syria, rally support for action in the council, and put pressure on Russian Federation and China "to hold to account those who used chemical weapons".

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who will visit Moscow next week, said the latest attack underlined the need for Russian Federation and Iran to save the civil war peace process by reigning in their ally's excesses.

Damascus has repeatedly denied using such weapons during the six-year war, which has killed hundreds of thousands and created the world's worst refugee crisis.
