Team Trump's Fight With Sanctuary Cities Heats Up

The city said it anticipates at least $55 million in federal funds to support operating expenses, almost $100 million in capital project support and about $2.6 million from Justice Department grants this year, Q13 Fox reported.

On Monday, Sessions said the Justice Department plans to withhold up to $4.1 billion from "sanctuary cities" - a blanket term for many areas that refuse immigration agents' requests to detain immigrants who entered the USA illegally. That policy said municipalities would miss out on federal grant money for lack of compliance with a federal law that says state and local governments may not prohibit workers from sharing information about a person's immigration status with federal immigration officials.

"Local governments do not enforce federal law", Holmes said.

If cities and states believe the law should be changed, then they must to go to the Congress to advocate changes, but unless and until changes are made, the law really is the law and it must be followed.

As they announced the federal lawsuit today, Murray and Holmes zeroed-in on Sessions' claims that cities and counties who label themselves "sanctuaries" for undocumented immigrants make the country less safe. The federal law referenced by the Attorney General (8 U.S.C. 1373) does not require any state or local jurisdiction to honor immigration detainers.




The Trump administration has argued that cities should collect the citizenship status of its residents and report that information to federal officials. While led by the City, other jurisdictions are welcome and encouraged to join this effort. They also vowed to prevent federal agents from accessing their schools and school records, and they openly contemplated employing cities' rarely-used oversight and subpoena powers to investigate federal immigration practices.

Under the order, Seattle could face at least $10.5 million in cuts to public safety programs, he said.

The threats to funding come as the Trump administration unrolls a new office within the Homeland Security Department focusing on American victims of immigrant crime.

Supporters of the policy argue that enlisting police cooperation in rounding up immigrants for removal undermines communities' trust in local police, particularly among Latinos. President Trump has repeatedly threatened to withhold federal funds from sanctuary cities.

"It uses terms that are vague and not defined, does not spell out the particular enforcement objectives of the Secretary and Attorney General, and does not describe in an intelligible manner the federal Executive Branch's understanding of the requirements purportedly imposed by Section 1373", the lawsuit reads. "The administration has created fear among immigrants". Every jurisdiction can benefit from the Justice Department's largesse, provided they do what they should have been doing all along: enforce the law.
