Tesla recalling 53000 vehicles due to faulty parking brake

Even though it's only a year old, the Tesla Model X actually has the highest complaint rate of all the models we studied that are now in production, at 27.9 complaints per 1,000 cars.

The company will be sending an official recall notice to customers, with information on how the parking brakes could be replaced.

Tesla said the possible manufacturing issue with the electric parking brakes on models built between February and October could prevent the brake from releasing.

Tesla said repairs can begin immediately and it will have enough parts for all affected vehicles by October. The carmaker believes that only a small percentage of the 53,000 cars recalled will be at risk due to the braking part, but it recalls all the vehicles, ensuring that there is no issue in the future. These brakes ensure the vehicle does not move once placed in Park, however, the affected models contain a small gear in the brakes that is prone to fracturing.

McNeill emphasized the importance of the Korean market, saying although it stands in the 11th spot in the global economic rankings, it is in fifth place in the luxury vehicle market.

A mechanical fix is expected to take less than 45 minutes to replace both brakes.

Jonathan McNeill, president of global sales and service of Tesla, during the opening of the company's service center in Hong Kong in November.

"Service capacity will not be an issue", a Tesla spokeswoman said in an email, noting that the mobile technicians will be able to handle the fix.

The recall comes two weeks after Tesla Motors surged in value to overtake General Motors in market capitalization. Although, company added that no reports of injury and accidents have been reported.

The company said on April 20 it was working with Italian supplier Freni Brembo SpA to get the replacement parts.

Last year, the company recalled 2,700 Model X vehicles after it learnt that the cars' third row seats could unlatch and fold over to the second row.
