Trump says he expects a health care deal soon

In private, Republicans have accused Democrats of "grandstanding" - using Nunes trips to the White House as a means to kill an investigation that they say is unlikely to turn up any smoking guns of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian intelligence.

On Tuesday, Nunes rebuffed calls to step aside from the investigation. "I have not gotten answers yet".

The Washington Post reported that Trump's administration wanted to block Yates' testimony - a claim denied Tuesday by White House spokesman Sean Spicer.

Who cleared Nunes into the White House? "They may not have taken a formal action, but we need to learn more about the way in which they indicated to Sally Yates, if they did at all, that they didn't want her to testify".

Spicer said the White House does not believe executive privilege should be an issue in Yates testifying, which is why McGahn did not respond.

"It moves forward just like it was before", Nunes told reporters.

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

Yates, who was sacked in January as acting attorney general after she refused to defend the Trump administration travel ban, was expected to be questioned about her role in the firing of Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn. In January, Yates informed the White House that Flynn had misled the vice president about his contacts with the Russian ambassador. What is more, it was revealed on Monday that Nunes paid an unscheduled visit to White House property the night before he made his announcement, reportedly to view the evidence. Richard Burr, the committee's Republican chairman, addressed reporters ahead of their panel's first hearing on Russian Federation.

Republican Devin Nunes, who heads the House Intelligence Committee, was called on to remove himself from the inquiry by Adam Schiff, the committee's senior Democrat, over a secret White House meeting Nunes attended.

Trump, who earlier this month tweeted unsubstantiated allegations that former President Barack Obama had wiretapped his campaign while he ran for office, has said he was "somewhat vindicated" by Nunes' statement about the surveillance.

Senate Democrats on the intelligence committee also question where Chairman Nunes got the reports.

"The members of the very committee themselves say they don't know what is being discussed. And he still keeps telling us that we're going to see this information but nobody has seen it", said Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA).

Nunes, R-Calif., said the pressure for him to resign was typical politics.

Garrett pushed back against Spicer's assertion, saying the question was relevant in this case because members of Nunes' own committee are still in the dark about the intelligence he received, since he has not yet shared it with them and is refusing to name his source.

"I've been around for quite a while, and I've never heard of any such thing", he said on CBS "This Morning".

The heat's also on because some Trump associates have volunteered to talk with the Senate and House intelligence panels about their alleged Russian connections. The two press conferences and the rush to meet with Donald Trump at the White House was all an act of political theater. It is highly unusual for a committee chairman and ranking member not to coordinate meetings related to an investigation.

Nunes' White House meeting - in which he is said to have met a confidential source - raised further questions about his independence from the Trump administration.
