Turkey 'welcomes' U.S. attack on Syria but believes it's 'not enough'

"I want to say that I welcome this concrete step as positive", Erdogan, a longtime foe of President Bashar al-Assad, said in a rally in the southern city of Antakya just north of the Syrian border.

Many world leaders have praised Donald Trump's move to strike Syria following the chemical attack of Idlib which killed 80 people, including children.

The US military fired almost 60 cruise missiles at a Syrian Army airfield, claiming that it was used to carry out a chemical weapons attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun in the province of Idlib a few days before.

"Is it enough? I don't see this as enough. the time has come for steps for a serious result to protect the oppressed Syrian people", he added.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also said safe zones in Syria were "now more important than ever".

The U.S.is asking for Russian Federation to fulfill its commitment and is calling on Assad to "cease the use of these weapons", Tillerson said.

According to Johnson, the USA representative was expected to deliver a "clear and coordinated message to the Russians".

But it highlights the rudderless nature of Turkish policy in Syria, as Ankara tries to forge stronger relations with both Moscow, Assad's main backer, and Washington, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally hitherto reluctant to confront the Syrian leader head-on.

The Foreign Secretary said: "Developments in Syria have changed the situation fundamentally".

"We have a multitude of topics, among which global counter-terrorism is of great significance", Zakharov told Russia's Rossiya-1 TV channel.

Syria's government denied it carried out any chemical attack on Khan Sheikhoun, and Russia's Defense Ministry said the toxic agents were released when a Syrian airstrike hit a rebel chemical weapons arsenal and munitions factory on the town's eastern outskirts. Moscow, which has military advisers on the ground supporting Assad's forces, denounced the USA action as illegal.

Dozens of representatives of the media, local authorities, fire departments, police, and the Syrian military have visited the airfield since then, with no alleged "storage units" or any chemical shells having been found, he said.

Tillerson noted he hopes Russian Federation will be "supportive of a process that will lead to a stable Syria".

"Turkey is where it was on April 6, 2017".

REYHANLI, Turkey Ahmad Mustafa fled northern Syria to Turkey four months ago, badly injuring his hand along the way.
