Twin quakes prompt evacuation in Batangas

Philippines Quake

A swarm of quakes rocked the Batangas province, about 90 km south of Manila, at around 3pm local time for around 20 minutes.

The same area was hit by a 5-magnitude quake after another 20 minutes.

In Manila, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) away, AFP reporters saw people running out of office buildings in the financial district.

Local television network ABS CBN broadcast images of passengers rushed to leave the Batangas International Port, which is near the epicentre of the earthquakes.

Garcia disclosed that one man was wounded by pieces of broken glass in his working area in a glass and aluminum shop in Mabini town, where the epicenter of the quake was traced.

Two minutes later, a stronger magnitude 6 quake struck at 12 km northwest of Mabini. Out of fear, they stayed in front of the town hall but returned this (Sunday) morning.

"The DSWD continues to extend relief assistance to families affected by the quake in Batangas and nearby provinces", said Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo in a statement.

In Quezon, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Action Officer Dr. Henry Buzar said the earthquakes were felt in the province. "But if their houses were damaged by the natural disaster, then that is when they have to get out of their homes", said Solidum.

In Mabini, Batangas, the quakes caused the seawall to collapse in Barangay San Teodoro and partially collapsed the resort hotel Camp Netanya and damaged three vehicles.

Intensity 5 was recorded at Batangas City, Lemery and Sto.

The movement was felt in varying intensities in about 40 towns in Batangas, Laguna, Cavite and Quezon and in metropolitan Manila.

Apart from the church, the municipal building also suffered a crack on the right side. "So there is no need to conduct relief operation", he also said.

The USGS said the tremor struck 3:08 p.m. and 3:09 p.m. with an epicenter 13 km northeast of Mindoro province.

Employees, tenants and customers of two big malls in Lucena City were evacuated to the parking area while awaiting the advisory of local disaster agencies.
