Twitter has killed the egg default profile picture

The simple image, which had been in use since 2010, is to be replaced by a neutral silhouette which Twitter says has been created to look empty or like a placeholder in order to encourage users to personalise their accounts.

The company thinks that changing the default image will encourage people to express themselves by uploading a photo.

The egg has been Twitter's default profile picture for seven years, but recently it has taken on a new meaning beyond the cute bird motif.

In a Friday blog post titled "Rethinking Our Default Profile Photo", Twitter explained how they settled on the placeholder image for new users.

"We chose grays because they feel temporary, generic, and universal", Twitter wrote. Don't worry, ovate friends; no matter what avatar Twitter tries to smooth things over with, you'll always be eggs to us.

We went through many iterations to develop the new profile photo to make sure it displayed those traits. In an effort to combat trolls and harassment, Twitter unveiled a new set of safety features in February, including preventing blocked users from creating new accounts and a notification filter flagging users with a default avatar. The company also took the figures of the avatars into consideration.

That's Twitter, deftly smashing their egg problem.

As anyone who has been trolled can attest, the most virulent tweets often come from people not using their real names. Twitter says it settled on a more neutral gray color scheme to give less prominence to account with a default photo.

One could see Twitter's ditching its toxic branding as a surface-level fix for its harassment problems, but the move comes weeks after the service (finally) rolled out tools to help curb abuse. When people identify their Twitter handles outside of Twitter, they precede it with a @.

With its user numbers stalled around 300 million and its stock in the gutter, Twitter is fighting to be more intuitive and approachable for a mainstream audience.
