Uganda arrests academic Stella Nyanzi for criticising president's wife

Ugandan Scholar Stella Nyanzi Arrested for Criticizing First Lady

Prosecution States that between January and March 2017 at Kampala district, Nyanzi while having no legitimate goal of communication posted on her facebook page suggestions and proposals referring to his Execellecy President Museveni that he is a pair of buttocks.

On her Twitter handle, she refers to herself as a "queer laughist and writer".

"The manner of Nyanzi's arrest on Friday was more about intimidation than law enforcement", she added.

As earlier reported on TUKO.co.ke, Nyanzi took on Mrs Museveni, Uganda's Education Minister when she (Museveni) suggested parents stop piling their children on boda bodas while sending them to school.

"During our STATE SUPERVISED visit, we also observed that Stella was allowed only 2 visitors at a time, while other prisoners were allowed up to six guests in one go".

Nyanzi appeared in court on Monday.

The controversial lawyer is being held at Luzira Maximum Security Prison until 25 April when her case will be heard. She fell down and died as neighbours struggled to find adequate transport to take her to hospital, after learning there was no ambulance for her.

Nyanzi pleaded not guilty to the charges and defended her posts as being full of metaphoric language, which was simply meant to stress her point and not to be abusive. "I just wanted to tell people that I honestly forgave that lady", the first lady was quoted as saying.

Ugandan authorities have arrested the outspoken scholar and activist Dr. It culminated in Nyanzi staging a naked protest outside Mamdani's office at Makerere.

"I totally reject the idea that one can not. and should not criticise the people responsible for abusing the rights of Ugandans and resources of Uganda through thirty-one years of increasing despotic family rule", Nyanzi said in one of her Facebook posts.

Her politically-charged and loquacious or verbose postings havepricked the bottoms of Gen. Museveni and his wife Janet Museveni, like the sharp thorns of the handsome Lycium flower plant judging by how the state has unleashed its wrath against her. Some call her fearless, others call her immoral and vulgar, the prosecution in the current case has questioned her mental health.

Dr. Nyanzi's unorthodox liberation tactics and unique verbosity and her subsequent persecution by the Museveni regime is already attracting attention beyond the shores of Uganda with reports in over a dozen news outlets, including: Al Jazeera, Voice of America, National Public Radio (NPR), FOX News which carried an Associated Press report, All Africa, the Standard Group, UK Daily Mail, The Black Star News which quoted a Trump administration official calling on Uganda to respect freedom of expression, Newsweek, Reuters, and BBC.

"Dr. Nyanzi is within her constitutional rights and we are for an all-out legal battle with the state to defend her rights".
