US may need to strengthen defenses against North Korea threat: Admiral

South Korea says key parts of a contentious US missile defense system have been installed a day after rival North Korea showed off its military power.

"What you've seen is really an integrated effort to prioritize diplomatic and informational aspects of national power, but also what you'll see soon is using the economic dimension of national power as well as the military preparations that are underway", the official said, barely 100 yards from where the entire U.S. Senate was receiving a briefing on the administration's strategy for North Korea.

Earlier, South Korea announced the installation of key parts of a contentious U.S. missile defence system meant to counter the North.

"If it flies, it will die", Adm. Harry Harris Jr., told Congress. Carl Vinson strike group: http://tmsnrt.rs/2pqOMWANorth Korea's nuclear program: http://tmsnrt.rs/2n0gd92North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threat is perhaps the most serious security challenge confronting U.S. President Donald Trump.

South Korea's trumpeting of progress in setting up the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defence system, or THAAD, came as high-powered U.S. military vessels converged on the Peninsula.

The briefings take place one day after North Korea celebrated the 85th anniversary of the founding of its army.

At a House Armed Services Committee, Harris rejected reports that the Carl Vinson group is vulnerable to North Korean attacks. A United States aircraft carrier and nuclear submarine are now stationed off of North Korea's coast.

Almost every USA senator attended an unusual all-hands meeting on North Korea at the White House Wednesday, though afterward few said any new information emerged about the increasingly tense United States standoff with Pyongyang.

In light of that, he said, "I must assume that the Kim Jong Un's nuclear claims are true, I know his aspirations certainly are".

More defensive radars would also be necessary for the state, Harris said.

Harris testified before a pair of Trump administration briefings on the North Korea crisis.

A joint statement from Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coates outlined the US's new stance on North Korea on Wednesday. The team was due to speak later to House members in the Capitol.

South Korea says key parts of a contentious USA missile defense system have been installed a day after rival North Korea showed off its military power.

The order also greatly expanded powers to blacklist anyone, including non-Americans, dealing with North Korea. The president's approach aims to pressure North Korea into dismantling its nuclear, ballistic missile, and proliferation programs by tightening economic sanctions and pursuing diplomatic measures with our allies and regional partners. The officials weren't authorized to speak publicly about plans for the closed-doors briefings and requested anonymity.

Although Harris expressed concern about North Korea's future capabilities, he downplayed some of its current threats to USA forces in the Pacific.

China is North Korea's sole major ally and its support is seen as crucial to US -led efforts to rein in Pyongyang.

Harris said the USA has "a lot of pre-emptive options" that would affect North Korea's "military calculus". But he declined to provide specifics in an open setting.

Harris scoffed at Chinese objections, saying he believed it was "preposterous" that Beijing would try to push South Korea against a system to defend itself, and suggested Beijing should focus on trying to influence North Korea.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the parts include two or three launchers, intercept missiles and a radar.

China says the deployment of Thaad will destabilise security and there have been protests in South Korea itself, where three people were injured in clashes with police as the system was being delivered to a former golf course on Wednesday.

"There is not a pretty military solution here", Cardin said.
