US Spectrum auction concluded T-Mobile US gained important frequencies

The wireless operator argued that the rules of the auction should prevent a monolith like Verizon or AT&T from gobbling up all of the available spectrum.

T-Mobile "cleaned up" at the historic auction that closed last March 30 after a year of bids and offers.

"With this purchase, T-Mobile now has significantly more low-band spectrum per customer than any other major provider and almost triple the low-band spectrum per customer than Verizon", T-Mobile said. The licenses are for spectrum in the 600MHz range, which in terms of spectrum, is some seriously high-quality stuff.

Comcast sold spectrum from three of its NBCUniversal owned stations in New York, Philadelphia and Chicago for Dollars 481.6 million.

T-Mobile US bid Dollars 8 billion, saying the investment will quadruple its low-band holdings, Reuters reported.

"The broadcasters showed up and, except for T-Mo, the carriers did not", said Preston Padden, a former Disney executive and a broadcast industry advocate. Dish came in second, spending $6.2 billion, while Comcast came in third with $1.7 billion.

The FCC auctioned off wireless spectrum that it bought from television broadcasters to help wireless providers meet the increasing demand created by smartphones. The result? One of the highest grossing auctions ever conducted by the FCC, with a total gross revenue coming in at a whopping $19.8 billion. This means that T-Mobile will catch up to the other carriers just as an entirely new network category will appear. The 600MHz spectrum was considered to be the cellular equivalent of prime beach front property, according to T-Mobile's Legere. But for the most part, T-Mobile lacks significant amounts of low-band spectrum. While T-Mobile was heavy participant in the auction, other nationwide carriers did not bid aggressively; in fact, Verizon did not win a license and Sprint did not participate. "With this purchase, T-Mobile now has significantly more low-band spectrum per customer than any other major provider and almost TRIPLE the low-band spectrum per customer than Verizon", T-Mobile states.

With this new spectrum, T-Mobile US can expand its LTE network coverage and further improve service quality.

AT&T also won less spectrum than the researchers expected, a bit less, at least - just $910 million worth.

The wireless licenses that were acquired by T-Mobile are for high-quality, low frequency spectrum at 600 MHz, which would lead to a stronger network for the Un-Carrier. Comcast also moved into positive territory, up as much as 0.3 percent. This auction sold spectrum in the 600 megahertz band, a low-frequency type that is optimal for covering great distances and giving you better indoor coverage.
