Welsh electoral 'earthquake' of Tory gains suggested by poll

Theresa May's party hit 40 per cent in a survey while Labour is projected to take 30 per cent.

Plaid Cymru, the Welsh nationalists, were third on 13 percent with the Liberal Democrats on 8 percent and UKIP on 6 percent.

Labour are down three points, but the Tories have soared by 12 points and appear to have picked up all the UKIP supporters, many of whom were previous Labour loyalists.

If repeated, the results would mean that for the first time since 1918 Labour had not won the most votes, or seats, in an election in Wales.

Their surprise 10-point lead points to Labour MPs" worst fears that the "Corbyn effect' is combining with May's growing popularity to radically slash the party's support.

The poll figures suggest that the Tories would win 21 seats and Labour just 15.

Martin Boon, of ICM, said the figure should be treated with caution because of a small sample size, but added: "It indicates significant losses for the Labour Party, and puts the Conservatives on course for around 400 seats".

"A vote for Labour in this election will not stop a Conservative UK government", she will say. The UKIP vote has collapsed by seven points, and the Lib Dems have lost one point of support.

He added: "But even if this continues to be a difficult election overall for the party, their local campaigners and sitting MPs seeking re-election will be hoping that their hard work will enable them to buck what now appear to be the national trends".

But former Plaid leader, Ieuan Wyn Jones, is seeking selection as a candidate in his former Ynys Mon constituency.

Voters in Wales backed leaving the European Union at last year's referendum, and May has said she is holding the election to win support for her Brexit strategy and strengthen her hand in upcoming negotiations.
