'Yep, I'm Gay': Happy 20th out anniversary, Ellen DeGeneres

Sarah Kate Ellis opens up about how Ellen DeGeneres'

When DeGeneres' character first came out on her sitcom in 1997, and DeGeneres came out herself at the same time, she was the first leading TV character to do so. Winfrey and Dern both recalled the backlash over their participation, with The Oprah Winfrey Showreceiving racist phone calls and Dern having difficulty finding work. "Even when this show started, the network was very uncomfortable with me even talking about my sexuality or my relationship", DeGeneres said during her talk show.

DeGeneres paid a price for coming out, something that's also hard to remember now that she's one of the most visible lesbians on the planet.

This Friday, Ellen DeGeneres celebrates the 20th anniversary of coming out on her sitcom and in real life on her show.

A gay-pride celebration for Ellen DeGeneres exploded in a furious bust-up with wife Portia de Rossi! "It was like we were spies or something".

Ellen devoted Friday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show to the 20th anniversary of her coming out to the masses. Upon returning to CT I took another job at the Feast to help me get back on my feet. "It was a much bigger deal then".

In this November 22, 2016 file photo, actress, comedian, and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, glances at President Barack Obama as she is presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House in Washington.

"I knew I didn't want to do that, " DeGeneres told the Los Angeles Daily News in 2000.

At some point, she managed to drag me to that place I feared - the Reader's Feast Café, where I downed nachos with homemade vegetarian chili and gazed askance at the women dining there with whom there was an unspoken kinship I wasn't ready to acknowledge.

'It was the first time that I ever felt like I wasn't alone, ' one said. "It's my life. It's how I live my life". As she is surely aware that less than 5 percent of the American population actually falls in this demographic, her desire to see higher representation can mean only one thing. "And then I realised since I had this secret that anxious me all the time that it made it feel like something was wrong". In 1997, the media climate was not almost as welcoming to LGBT people as it is now; however, as proven by the countless articles published commemorating her bravery, times have clearly changed.

Oprah Winfrey is another guest on the show, and the preview showed her praising DeGeneres for her bravery. You have to just hold on and know that something good will come from it and there's always a lesson in everything. "And I knew that there was a possibility that people would hate me for the simple fact that no matter how much they loved my comedy or my show, but they might hate me if they knew I was gay", she says.
