2 quake shakes residents in northern BC

The earthquake struck Monday morning

The U.S. Geological Survey reports more than 100 aftershocks, including almost a dozen early this morning, have rumbled across the Alaska Panhandle, southern Yukon and parts of northwestern British Columbia.

There have been 38 earthquakes that measured higher than six magnitudes since 1985-the year Earthquakes Canada started collecting information. "After the quakes this morning there have been several aftershocks", tweeted Yukon Protective Services, the agency responsible for public safety in Yukon.

A little after 6 a.m., Revenaugh felt the second quake, which was a little bigger than the first at an about 6.3 magnitude quake.

A 6.2 natural disaster shook northern B.C. and the Yukon early this morning.

"I was in bed and woken up by violent shaking".

Luann Baker-Johnson, who owns a glass-blowing studio, said she jumped in her vehicle after feeling the first quake so she could get to her studio and assess the damage.

The large aftershock struck within a few miles.

The USGS put the quakes' epicenter inside the Yukon in a wilderness preserve about 85 kilometers (53 miles) west-northwest of Skagway, Alaska.

The first quake knocked out the entire substation at the Whitehorse Rapids Dam, she said.

The geological survey website has recorded hundreds of reports of people feeling the shaking. However, based on data so far, as well as the location of today's earthquakes, these were likely associated with the Denali Fault, where slip is approximately 2 mm/yr (Wesson et al., 1999).
