715 pounds lighter, Egyptian woman leaves India

After almost 83 days of treatment under Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, Chairman, Institute of Minimal Access Surgical Sciences & Research Centre, Saifee Hospital, she now weighs around 171 kgs.

Before she had her operation, she hasn't left her home in Alexandria, Egypt, for about twenty years.

It is a new day, new hope, and new set of doctors for Eman Abdul Atti, who landed safely in Abu Dhabi yesterday night.

I am sure this is exactly what our doctors at the Saifee hospital in Mumbai have in their minds.

An Egyptian woman who was believed to have been the world's heaviest has been admitted to a hospital in Abu Dhabi to receive further treatment.

Through the help of India's external affairs minister, Eman Ahmed was flown to Mumbai at 500-kilograms, or about 1,100 pounds, via a cargo plane in February to undergo treatment, where her medical team found that she also has severe hypothyroidism, kidney and liver failure, right-sided heart failure, lung disease, urinary tract infection, gout, bed sores, and right-sided paralysis. "Eman did not lose 240 kg or 260 kg".

After the treatment of the worlds heaviest woman - Egypts Eman Ahmed - at a hospital here created controversy, the Maharashtra government has made a decision to come up with guidelines to deal with global patients.

Despite her great advances, Ahmed, 37, still need to go through additional treatment. "Which doctor would be out of his mind to seek publicity on the most hard case where the odds are so heavily loaded against you?" he said last night on NDTV, responding to criticism of Ms Ahmed's privacy being compromised.

The emotion and drama surrounding Ms. Ahmed's departure just about covered for the continuing bad blood between her sister Shaimaa Selim and Dr. Lakdawala. There was some criticism on behalf of her sister, Shaimaa, who claimed she was not receiving proper treatment.

Ahmed's family could not be immediately reached for comment.

Her doctor, Muffazal Lakdawala, one of India's leading bariatric surgeons, began by putting her on a special liquid diet to get her weight down to a low enough level to perform a stomach-shrinking bypass procedure. Shaina NC, a spokesperson of the ruling BJP, was assigned to brief reporters on Ms Ahmed's condition and repeatedly reassured that doctors and nurses were providing quality care. She had not left her house in 25 years, and could not walk.

A few days ago, she accused the doctor of being a "lair" and posted videos and photos of the patient in her Facebook page and raised doubt over the progress of her health.
