Andy Murray beaten again as he goes down in Madrid

Rafael Nadal has thrashed Nick Kyrgios in their Madrid Open third-round clash

World number one Andy Murray lost 6-3 6-3 to unseeded Borna Coric in the Madrid Open third round on Thursday as his hard start to the claycourt season continued, while Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic eased into the quarter-finals.

He surrendered his serve in the seventh game, giving the 20-year-old Coric three break points.

The Croatian arrived at the tournament in good form following his first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour title in Morocco in April.

1 has now failed to reach the quarter-finals in any of his last three Masters series events, as well as suffering a shock fourth round exit at the Australian Open to Mischa Zverev in January.

World number 59 Coric, handed a reprieve to enter the draw despite losing in qualifying to Mikhail Kukushkin, will face either Grigor Dimitrov or Dominic Thiem in Friday's quarter-finals.

"I made a lot of unforced errors and I also didn't find any way to make it a more competitive match, so that's the most disappointing thing for me".

"I didn't help myself find a way into the match to start playing better".

"It's not always the worst thing losing a match, but it's sometimes the manner of how you lose the match is what can be concerning or disappointing".

Murray won his only title of the year in Dubai and had started the clay season trying to regain his form following a right elbow injury that kept him out of the Miami Open and the Davis Cup quarterfinals.

The Serb was in control during his service games and broke Lopez once in each set to secure the 6-4, 7-5 victory under a closed roof on center court in the Spanish capital.

Djokovic saved the only break point he conceded to Lopez, who was playing in the tournament for a record 16th time. "I think Feliciano played really well, especially in the second set".

He will next play against sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, who defeated David Ferrer 6-4, 6-3 to deny the Spaniard his 700th career win. After saving four match points he was unable to take his first opportunity to clinch the win.

Nadal faces David Goffin in Friday's quarter-finals after the Belgian beat world number six Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-2.

"I was a little bit nervous, to be honest, before the match, because she has a big serve", Halep said.

Women's defending champ Simona Halep has crushed American Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-1 to reach the semis.
