Salman Abedi was particularly upset by the killing a year ago of a Muslim friend whose death he believed went unnoticed by "infidels" in the United Kingdom, said the relative, speaking on condition of anonymity over concerns for her own security.

The final movements of suicide bomber Salman Abedi, who killed 22 people when he detonated a bomb at Manchester Arena on Monday night, have been pieced together as sources came forward to offer details from the past weeks.

The Home Secretary said the threat level would remain at a heightened state as the investigation continues.

There she will meet with President Trump, with whom she is expected to raise the issue of the leaks.

Manchester police have stopped sharing investigative information with the USA until they are guaranteed an end to media leaks, a British official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Pictures published by the New York Times included remains of the bomb and of the rucksack carried by the suicide bomber, and showed blood stains amid the wreckage.

"This is until such time as we have assurances that no further unauthorised disclosures will occur", said the counterterrorism source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Contacted by AFP, Greater Manchester Police declined to comment on the BBC report.

"These relationships enable us to collaborate and share privileged and sensitive information that allows us to defeat terrorism and protect the public at home and overseas".

"When the trust is breached it undermines these relationships, and undermines our investigations and the confidence of victims, witnesses and their family", the group said.

Officials scouring the background of the British-born bomber said he was likely part of a wider terrorist network.

Eight men are in now custody after a man and a woman were released without charge, Greater Manchester police said in a tweet.

Citing unnamed federal security sources, Focus reported that Salman Abedi twice flew from a German airport in recent years and wasn't on any global watch list.

A German magazine, meanwhile, reported that British police informed their German counterparts that Mr Abedi had received paramilitary training in Syria. British officials, however, have not commented on whether Abedi had links to ISIL or other extremist groups.

Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins told reporters it was very clear they were investigating what he described as "a network".

Ahmed bin Salem, a spokesman for the Deterrence Force, which supports Libya's UN-backed unity government, said Hashem Abedi was aware of his brother's attack plan and both were members of IS. His brother, Ismail, was among those arrested.

According to photographs from the scene of the attack at the 21,000-capacity Manchester Arena, Abedi's device appeared to be fairly sophisticated. This was, again, potentially damaging to the inquiry, because the components of the bomb could help to lead investigators toward its manufacturer. But leaks from the investigation were creating a diplomatic mess.

In addition to those killed, 116 people received medical treatment at Manchester hospitals for wounds from the blast. Queen Elizabeth II visited victims of the attack at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, telling 14-year-old Evie Mills and her parents: "It's terrible".

"She [Grande] sounds very, very good, a very good singer", the queen responded in footage broadcast by Sky News.

The parents of 14-year Eilidh MacLeod, from the Hebridean island of Barra, confirmed on Thursday that she also died.

In attacking the concert, the bomber targeted an audience full of teenagers and 'tweens - Grande fans who call themselves "Arianators".

"My heart, prayers and deepest condolences are with the victims of the Manchester attack and their loved ones", she said in opening the statement.

Grande in her statement said she has been focused "non-stop" on the victims and that "I will think of them with everything I do for the rest of my life".
