Chibok schoolgirls were swapped for 5 Boko Haram commanders

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday received the 82 Chibok schoolgirls freed by Boko Haram on Saturday.

"However, we recognize the concern of President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure the earliest release of the Chibok girls for domestic and worldwide considerations".

"He promised that the presidency will personally supervise their rehabilitation".

Femi Adesina says the girls have been received at the airport by the president's chief of staff.

"Huge numbers", the personal assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, tweeted late yesterday.

After a six-week medical leave in London earlier this year, Buhari indicated that further checkups might be needed.

The President's aide while speaking on Channels Television's breakfast show, Sunrise Daily, monitored by Nigerian Bulletin on Monday noted that the girls had been spruced up before they arrived at the Villa at 7:00 pm.

Parents of the missing girls expressed anxiety over the fate of their daughters. He emphasized that he considered all 82 of the girls to be his daughters "because majority worship in my church".

More than 20 girls were released last October in a deal brokered by the International Committee of the Red Cross. "I have to be anxious with the intention to see if one of my daughters is among the released ones".

Some parents did not live long enough to see their daughters released, underscoring the tragedy of the three-year saga.

In Chibok, the remote town in northeastern Nigeria where the girls were abducted from, families were nervously waiting for names of those freed to be published. Others did not want to come home because they'd been radicalized by their captors, the girls said.

The European Union High Representative, Federica Mogherini has described the release of 82 Chibok girls as a "glimmer of hope" that all Boko Haram abductees would regain freedom.

Some parents of the kidnapped girls are in the capital, Abuja.

The rehabilitation process has previously been criticised, mainly for keeping the girls in Abuja, around 560 miles from their families in Chibok.

A statement issued by presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina said President Buhari had planned to leave Sunday afternoon, but made a decision to tarry a bit, due to the arrival of 82 Chibok girls who arrived Abuja earlier in the day.

"A lot of factors come into play when a nation has to decide whether or not to engage in prisoner-hostage swap", he said. The official who confirmed the release spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to reporters on the matter.

Neither the government nor Boko Haram, which has links to the Islamic State group, gave details about the exchange. Yemi Osinbajo, will act in his place. Amnesty International has recorded 41 cases of mass abductions in the last three years.

It believed that with such exchange, the Boko Haram terrorists had been emboldened to continue their terror and kidnapping of innocent people. Nigeria is nearly evenly split between a mainly Muslim north and a predominantly Christian south.
