China tests new missile in Bohai Sea: Ministry

China has voiced its anger over the deployment of the USA -made Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system in South Korea last month.

The operations were created to raise operational capability "to effectively deal with national security threats", the statement added.

Hong Kong-based iFeng news suggested that the tested missile might be an E/ADF-26B, an upgraded version of a previously-used missile equipped with the new capability of electronic attacks.

The statement said the People's Liberation Army's Rocket Force had conducted the drills and tests in the Bohai Sea, near the Korean Peninsula.

Beijing has tested a new missile close to the Korean peninsula amid heightened tensions in the region, after North Korea, South Korea, and the United States recently conducted military drills in the area.

Opposing the long-disputed deployment of the system, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that a peaceful solution to the Korean crisis was the "only right choice".

It was unclear from the announcement when the missile test took place, but Beijing waited until the end of South Korea's presidential election to make the launch public, Yonhap reported.

The Chinese military has just successfully test-fired a new kind of missile near the Korean Peninsula.

"Considering the type of missile and the test location it is evident that we conduced a firing experiment targeting aircraft carriers". It said that it was created to intercept incoming missiles from North Korea, Reuters reported.

North Korea has also recently conducted large-scale, live-fire exercises on its eastern coast.
