Cornyn says he will stay in Senate, won't be FBI director

On Friday, protesters gathered outside of a Galleria-area restaurant where Cornyn had a speaking engagement with supporters.

Cornyn was not at the Senate leadership press conference Tuesday, as is customary. Cornyn will hit his limit in January 2019.

"(Gov. Abbott) has to calculate what would serve his interest and his re-election best, and what would serve the interest of the Republican party in the long term. Four candidates - Cornyn, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, attorney Alice Fisher and judge Michael Garcia - have interviews scheduled Saturday.

In addition to Cornyn, Judge Merrick Garland also reportedly has no interest in taking over the position. At the Justice Department, she worked in a variety of jobs including leading the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review, which helped oversee intelligence-gathering activities related to the nation's top secret surveillance court. He serves as Senate majority whip, making him the second-ranking Republican in the chamber. But Democratic strategists have already put senators on notice they would hold their feet to the fire in voting against Cornyn.

All things considered, though, by Monday Cornyn's chances of getting the appointment seemed to be tanking. Henry E. HudsonHudson is a federal judge in Richmond who earned praise from conservatives when he struck down the centerpiece of the Obama administration's health care law in 2010.

Then there is the fact that Cornyn's across-the-aisle friend, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, said Democrats will not support confirming a new Federal Bureau of Investigation leader unless a special investigator is appointed to look into Trump's connections to Russian.

It could also re-open the door for Congressman Joaquin Castro, who decided not to challenge Sen.

In Sen. Cornyn's full statement, he said the country "needs a well-credentialed, independent FBI Director".

How partisan has Cornyn been? Day by day, most Democrats and at least one Republican senator called for a less political appointee.

"Cornyn is fine; he's a great leader".

Cornyn may have already made the short list.

DeVos, who is a proponent of school choice, said in February that such schools were "real pioneers" when it came to choice, without acknowledging racism as the main factor that led to the creation of such institutions.

"I think it's now time to pick somebody that comes from within the ranks or is such a reputation that has no political background at all", he said. "And I am profoundly disappointed by the race to the bottom this presidential campaign has become".

Should Cornyn be offered and accept the post, it would be an enormous blow to the state's clout on Capitol Hill.
