World Press Freedom Day UNESCO Decries 102 Journalists’ Death In 2016

Following the conference, the participants signed the Jerusalem Declaration on the Freedom of the Press, calling upon governments, organizations and media owners "to respect the freedom of the press and to protect the journalists".

Free, diverse and independent media are indispensable to promoting and protecting democracy worldwide. "Here in the Kurdistan Region, in the imitation of undemocratic and freedom oppressing countries, media freedom and the free media have been sanctioned, and constrained", Diyari Mohamad, Metro's deputy head said in a statement.

Mogens says Uganda dropped from last year's position of 102 due to the increase in intimidation and violence against journalists, closure of media outlets in the past years, internet cuts and physical attacks on reporters, among others.

"This vague and disproportionate directive immediately reminded the media and citizen journalists of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's censorship methods", said RSF. "On #WorldPressFreedomDay, we remember the press was to serve the governed, not the governors".

It urged the government to uphold the rule of law in media establishments and to take steps that ensure social security and decent wages for journalists. "I call on every Afghan to stand with the courageous men and women of the media and recognize their many contributions to democracy and civil society in Afghanistan", he said.

As the world celebrates World Press Freedom day today, South Africans and the local media have reason to rejoice as the state of press freedom here at home continues to improve.

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has joined the Gambia Press Union to mark this year's World Press Freedom Day (WPFD 2017). Katharine Child, a journalist for The Times newspaper, was bruised after being manhandled by a person who identified himself as a policeman at a religious event hosted by the Gupta family.

India has gone down from last year's 133 rank.

By now, we are all aware of the fact that freedom of expression is an obvious fundamental right in the modern world.

According to the report, Norway is the most press tolerating country while North Korea has the dubious distinction of being the worst for journalists.

The government must act to secure press freedom by repealing draconian press laws that are inimical press freedom and end the public demonization of critical journalists.
