Death sentences upheld after brutal India gang rape

Nirbhaya's parents talk on phone at the Supreme Court in New Delhi on Friday. The apex court has confirmed death sentence for the four convicts of Nirbhaya gang rape case who raped and tortured the 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in Delhi

The court termed the incident as "most brutal, barbaric and diabolical attack" on the victim.

Priyanka Chopra took to Twitter to write an emotional letter after the verdict of Nirbhaya case came out yesterday. Justice Misra said that this felt like a story from another world where the appetite for sex, the hunger for violence, the position of the empowered and the attitude of perversity, to say the least, are bound to shock the collective conscience.

Justice Dipak Misra said the 23-year-old woman had suffered a "devastating hour of darkness" as the court rejected an appeal against the death penalty, which was handed down in 2013. "Rape deeply affects the entire psychology of the woman and humiliates her...the testimony of the rape victim must be appreciated in the background of the entire case and the trauma which the victim has undergone". The court said that the testimony of the woman's friend who was with her in bus and the first prosecution witness, was impeccable and relied upon. The 23-year-old physiotherapy intern succumbed to injuries and her rape case was something that got the tag- "rarest of the rare". The criminals gang-raped her in a moving bus in south Delhi.

The accused - low-paid migrants to New Delhi - brutally assaulted Singh behind tinted windows for 45 minutes, penetrating her with an iron bar. She died on December 29th in a Singapore hospital.

"This is perhaps one of the most gruesome cases and the Supreme Court judgement punishing all the accused to death will have the best demonstrative effect in containing crimes against women and social orderliness at large", said Dependra Pathak, Chief Spokesperson and Special Commissioner (Operations) of Delhi Police. "I will sleep peacefully tonight".

Their daughter, too, will now rest in peace, Mr Singh, and his wife Asha Devi, told Press Trust of India after the judgment. She is returning to the home along with her male friend after watching the movie.

"Those who commit such crimes should hang their heads, not us", Mr Singh said.

Justice R Banumathi, in her separate order, agreed on this point but went a step further by stating that once a rape victim gives a testimony, other evidence to corroborate it must not be insisted upon.

"What about justice for others whose cases are pending in courts", Mr Singh asked. There was "not a moment" when I had not remembered her daughter.

Crimes like the one before us can not be looked with "magnanimity", she said.
