Iran "continues to leverage cyber espionage, propaganda, and attacks to support its security priorities, influence events and foreign perceptions, and counter threats-including against USA allies in the region", Coats testified.

Coats appeared before the committee along with other intelligence agency leaders, including Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers.

The U.S. and South Korea Launch Operation Max Thunder Thu, April 20, 2017 The US and South Korea kicked off a big exercise just as North Korea threatens "thermonuclear war". Coats declined to provide such details in an open hearing. Sen.

Six top US intelligence officials told Congress on Thursday they agree with the conclusion that Russian Federation acted to influence last year's election, countering President Donald Trump's assertions that the hacking remains an open question.

Testifying beside Coats, the head of the military's Defense Intelligence Agency, Vincent Stewart, said the state of the 15-year conflict will deteriorate from a stalemate in favor of the belligerents if left unchecked.

"US-based homegrown violent extremists (HVEs) will remain the most frequent and unpredictable Sunni violent extremist threat to the USA homeland", the threat assessment said in a section entitled "Terrorist Threat to the United States".

Coats described the growing threat of Iran's missile program in a written testimony to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on Thursday.

The report also notes that Iran's progress in its space program could expedite its path to an ICBM since space launch vehicles use similar technologies.

North Korea's nuclear programme poses as a "potentially existential threat" to Washington, US National Intelligence Director Dan Coats said. While the administration has said it will talk with Kim's regime if it shows a willingness to abandon its nuclear and ballistic-missile programs, the report signaled that any such move is unlikely.

The deal lengthens the time it would take Iran to develop enough material for a nuclear weapon "from a few months to about a year", he said. Coats said Afghan troops suffer from "combat casualties, desertions, poor logistical support and weak leadership". But much of the attention turned to Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, making his first public appearance in that role since President Donald Trump fired James Comey on May 9.

The Trump administration is considering sending 3,000 to 5,000 additional troops to Afghanistan to help train Afghan security forces.
