Congo adds heavy hitters to US lobbying campaign

Health authorities are also looking into a total of nine suspected cases.

Health workers outside Connaught Hospital after the arrival of a patient with symptoms of the Ebola virus in the city of Freetown, Sierra Leone, August 4, 2014. The first case dates back to April 22.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Health informed the WHO that of five samples, one tested positive for the Zaire strain of the Ebola virus at the National Institute of Biomedical Research laboratory in Kinshasa, the capital.

Health officials today announced an outbreak of Ebola virus in a remote area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Congolese authorities have reported nine suspected cases of Ebola infection in the past three weeks; the World Health Organization has confirmed one, and tests are pending on others. Additional testing is ongoing. Diseases like Ebola, MERS and various global pandemics are always going to be out there. The deadly hemorrhagic fever was first detected in its dense tropical forests in 1976 and named after the nearby river Ebola. The most recent recorded epidemic was in August 2014 in Boende region, where the disease was brought under control where it started in Lokolia, now in Tshuapa province. "People are constantly coming and going across the border to visit friends and family, so we are taking very urgent preventative measures to contain the risk".

The DRC suffered a three-month outbreak of Ebola back in 2014. Work is still underway to get the vaccine licensed.

When these results were published in December, Merck, the vaccine's manufacturer, committed to ensuring 300,000 doses of the vaccine could be available in the case of an emergency.

"The vaccine has shown high efficacy in clinical trials and could play a vital role in protecting the most vulnerable", he added.

The trial used an innovative design, a so-called "ring vaccination" approach, the same method used to eradicate small pox.

In a visit to Guinea in 2015, The Globe and Mail witnessed the rollout of the Canadian vaccine and saw the difficulty of persuading some people to accept the vaccine, because of frequent false rumours about its dangers.
