Fireworks cache explodes in Mexico, killing at least 12

The blast happened on Monday evening in a rural area of central Puebla state during preparations for a local festival next week, according to Diodoro Carrasco, a state government senior official in Puebla state.

El Universal cited local officials as reporting someone threw a lit firework that landed inside a building behind the local church where the pyrotechnic materials for the celebration were being stored, causing a blast that seriously damaged the structure.

Three more people died later at hospital.

London [UK], May 9: More than a dozen people, including at least five children, were killed following an explosion in a fireworks warehouse in Mexico.

Authorities say at least 12 people have been killed by a fireworks explosion in central Mexico.

Army troops and government officials cordoned off the blast site as ambulances rush in to collect the wounded.

It comes just months after 31 people were killed at a fireworks market in Tultepec, Mexico. State governor Antonio Gali Fayad plans to visit the village soon.

The area is located around 200 km south-east of Mexico City.

Investigators believe a rocket exploded at that market and set off a chain reaction of other blasts. The market was well stocked with fireworks at the time and there were hundreds of customers.

The use of fireworks during holiday festivities is very common in Mexico, sometimes with fatal consequences. It was reduced to smoldering ruins.

Despite frequent and deadly accidents, data show Mexicans continue to spend about $10 million each month on fireworks nationwide.
