Hillary Clinton blames misogyny, FBI, Russia, herself for 2016 loss

President Donald Trump

Former U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday that sexism played a role in her loss to Donald Trump but FBI Director James Comey and intervention by Russian Federation were more decisive factors in her downfall.

"If the election had been on October 27, I would be your president", Clinton told CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour at a women's event in NY.

"I can't be anything other than who I am", Clinton admitted.

Mr Comey, the FBI director, submitted a letter to the US Congress, in late October - just over a week before the US election - announcing he had reopened an investigation into Mrs Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state. "I think we are potentially going backwards".

But given Clinton's public anger over her loss and Trump's unwillingness to move on, a long-range rhetorical rematch is inevitable, especially since Clinton has a book coming in the fall. Clinton, they say, has remained in touch with an array of groups and while it may appear she is growing more political, the speeches don't foretell a more forceful jump back into the political fray. But she wouldn't apologize for her wonkiness and love of policy detail, even if that made it hard for her to connect with some voters.

According to McClatchy, Canter's conclusion "is shared broadly by other Democrats who have examined the data, including senior members of Clinton's campaign and officials at the Democratic data and analytics firm Catalist".

"He (Russian President Vladimir Putin) certainly interfered in our election", Mrs Clinton said.

But she declared herself geared up to stay politically active and involved with the Trump opposition, for whom "Resist" has become a popular slogan.

Although Clinton lost some states by very narrow margins (and easily won the popular vote) - which supports the idea of Russia/Comey tipping the balance - her team also took some states like Wisconsin and MI for granted and paid the price.

She said that during the campaign, she met people in central Pennsylvania that told her they only had dial-up service.

"'Hey, let's get together and, you know, see if we can't get along and maybe we can, you know, come up with some sort of a deal.' That doesn't work", Clinton said in an apparent mocking of Trump.

"Oh my gosh, yes, you'll read my confession and my request for absolution", she said, a reference to a book she is writing.

Clinton will also speak on Tuesday at a Planned Parenthood 100-year anniversary gala, where she is expected to slam Trump's handling of women health issues during his first months in office, including attempts to defund the women's health organization.
