Jets won't pick up safety Calvin Pryor's fifth-year option

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

Calvin Pryor is officially entering a contract year after the New York Jets informed the fourth-year safety his 2018 option would be declined.

Kimberly Martin of Newsday says a source has told her that the team won't be picking up Pryor's option just days after the team drafted LSU safety Jamal Adams and Florida safety Marcus Maye. Williams, out of Bethune-Cookman, managed 11 games, no starts and two seasons for the Jets.

The expected move, first reported by the NFL Network, will make Pryor, a first-round pick in 2014, a free agent after the 2017 season. It is only guaranteed in the case of injury, so teams can cut players after this season and not owe them anything. They did the same thing with Dee Milliner previous year and then cut him before the season. Coach Todd Bowles said Pryor, the No. 18 overall pick out of Louisville three years ago, could be used in three-safety formations.

Those two picks basically said that the Jets were done with Pryor, even before they decided not to pick up the option.

This is not a surprise given that the Jets already had Pryor on the trading block. The Jets will likely try to trade the strong safety before that happens. Pryor played much better in 2015 in Bowles' first year, but his play slipped again in 2016.

That was one of the many topics discussed on this week's Jets Chat.
