Kipchoge sets new unofficial marathon world record

MONZA ITALY- MAY 06 Eliud Kipchoge reacts at the end of the Nike Breaking2 Sub Two Marathon Attempt at Autodromo di Monza

In the months before the event, Nike said it wouldn't consider it a failure if the runners didn't break two hours.

The sub-two hour mark required a pace below four minutes and 35 seconds per mile, which the determined Kipchoge managed to stick to until falling behind the pace auto in the last two laps of the 2.4 km circuit. It's a feat, if accomplished, that would send human athletic advancement hurtling into the future. The temperature was around 10 degrees, just about flawless for marathon running.

The race began in pre-dawn gloom at a brutal speed behind pacemakers, who were world class runners in their own right, including former world champion middle distance runner Bernard Lagat of the United States.

Kipchoge, 32, the 2016 Olympic champion and the 2016 victor of the London Marathon, covered the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 26 seconds, ESPN and The Associated Press reported. The duo still completed the 17 laps of the 1.5-mile Monza track. If not, you will most likely get more chances.

Will it count as a record?

In his pursuit of sporting immortality Kipchoge had to set a ferocious pace of 4min 34sec per mile - seven seconds quicker than the world record pace set by Kimetto at the 2014 Berlin Marathon.

At 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, three of the most talented runners on the planet toed the line of a race track in Monza, Italy.

According to Runner's World, which chronicled the process, scientists at Nike's research lab analyzed all kinds of metrics, such as oxygen usage, skin temperature and how much carbohydrate the runners stored in their legs.

"I think we need to accept it as it is".

When asked on the awards podium how he might make up those 25 seconds, Kipchoge shook his head and replied, "It's not just me - the world is only 25 seconds away".

"It's the last big, once-in-a-generation barrier..."

"I've seen the magic of gold shoes and swift suits".

Bedford served as race director of the London Marathon for two decades until stepping down in 2011.

For the entire attempt, Kipchoge ran behind a six-man pacesetting team which trailed a time-keeping vehicle by less than 10 metres. The runners were also delivered essential fluids on the move by moped in order to prevent them slowing down at feeding stations.

Runners take up formation with Kipochge at the back in red.

"If we weren't convinced before that it was going to happen sooner or later, we have to be convinced now". Each runner will be wearing shoes specifically designed for him.

The finished product looks futuristic, the sort of shoe meant to strut on a catwalk rather than pound around a racetrack. Preparations for the sub-two-hour attempt have been encouraging.

The "race" will be a wild anomaly for many reasons, most notably the amount of scientific research and development that went into almost every aspect. On the 63rd anniversary of Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute.

That day, Bannister hopped on a train from London having worked in the hospital that morning and only made a decision to compete in the race half an hour before it was due to start. However, the aim of Breaking2 was more to test the limits of human endurance, making the event part science experiment and part one-of-a-kind marketing endeavor for Nike.
