Labour thinks it can win back seats in Glasgow from SNP

Despite having the largest number of councillors, this doesn't guarantee the Tory party a controlling interest - unless Labour and the SNP can not reach an agreement on a coalition deal.

But even if everyone who voted independent on Thursday would have voted SNP in a general election (a highly improbable supposition in itself), that clearly can not account for all of the difference between the two performances.

With exactly one month to go until the general election, Ms Sturgeon said that without a strong SNP voice for Scotland at Westminster the Tories will think they have a free hand to negotiate any Brexit deal - or crash out of Europe without a deal - in the months and years to come.

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May will order her Conservatives to forget last week's triumph in local elections and to renew their efforts to work "flat out" for "every vote" in Britain's national campaign.

"On June 8, people can vote for a SNP candidate who will campaign every day for another divisive referendum or they can back a Labour candidate, who will be a local champion for constituents".

"So they put that issue centre stage and they lost the election".

More than 36 per cent of voters in the constituency chose the Tories as their first preference, while only 31 per cent backed the SNP, it claims. We aren't going to roll over and let the SNP tear it up.

Still, that disappointment did not stop the SNP winning half the vote in the United Kingdom election in 2015, so perhaps it will not do so again.

SNP leader and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon pointed out that her party had ousted Labour from control of a Glasgow City Council after 40 years, and still had the largest number of councillors across the country.

But while admitting the Conservatives had done well in Scotland, Sturgeon insisted that May's party had eaten into Labour's rather than her own SNP party's support.

Labour's only Scottish MP in the last Parliament, Ian Murray, also looks poised to lose his Edinburgh South seat to the Tories.

And this is where we'll be until June 8th and most likely for some time after that, two entrenched camps - unionist and nationalist - shouting at one another about the constitution.

Meanwhile, leading pollster Professor John Curtice said claims of a Tory resurgence could be overblown - and that the contest to be Scotland's biggest pro-Union party was not yet won.

"Taking nothing away from the tremendous result they had in 2015, they then tried to do that thing where they made out that the SNP was Scotland and Scotland was the SNP".

Meanwhile, although the SNP's share of the first preference vote may have held steady across Scotland as a whole as compared with 2012, it has not held up everywhere. And now the Tories have older people in their sights too - as they gear up to end the pensions triple lock.

It also believes it has a chance in Glasgow East.

Tony Blair's landslide victory 20 years ago all but wiped out Scottish Conservatism, with the party failing to win a Westminster seat in 1997 and never holding more than a single constituency since.
