Manchester Police Seek Clues in Concert Bomber's Suitcase

Rudd took the unusual step of confirming the intelligence service's internal probe as Britons prepare to head to the polls in 10 days to elect a new government, an election in which security and policing are now expected to be forefront of voters' minds.

Authorities have come under intense scrutiny in the wake of the atrocity amid claims members of the public had previously raised the alarm about the perpetrator.

He said Abedi may have had the blue suitcase with him when he visited the Wilmslow Road area and the Manchester city center in the days before the blast. Did you see him?

"We have no reason to believe the case and its contents contain anything risky, but would ask people to be cautious", Jackson added.

The Mail on Sunday newspaper reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation told MI5 in January that British-born Abedi, who was of Libyan descent, was part of a North African Islamic State cell plotting an attack in the United Kingdom.

MI5 has opened an internal review after Abedi slipped down the list of suspects under investigation, despite the tip-off.

Police are searching a landfill site on the outskirts of Greater Manchester as they hunt the suitcase, the BBC reported.

"There is a lot of information coming out at the moment about what happened, how this occurred, what people might or might not have known", Rudd told Sky News.

"It is right that MI5 take a look to find out what the facts are", she added.

MI5 says it will hold an inquiry into the way it handled the warnings that Abedi was a potential threat.

British security services have thwarted 18 militant plots in the United Kingdom since 2013, including five since an attack in central London in March, when a man mowed down pedestrians in a vehicle and then stabbed a policeman at the entrance to parliament, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters last week.

When CNN asked the Home Office for a response to reports the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned MI5 about Abedi, a spokesman declined to comment.

Several people who knew Abedi, including some of his friends, have said that they had warned authorities about his radical views over the past five years.

On Thursday, a U.S. official told CNN the bomber likely received some ISIS training by traveling to Syria in the months before the attack.

The investigation brought the arrest of a 23-year-old man in Sussex, south of London, on suspicion of terrorism offenses.

None of the men arrested in Britain have so far been charged with any crime and police have up to 14 days in which to do so under special anti-terrorism laws.
