New Orleans removes 2nd of 4 Confederate statues before dawn

Just beyond the chain link fence and barricades installed by police to ensure that simmering tensions didn't break into a boil, supporters and opponents of removal shouted into the night.

"It's a historical artifact that needs to be preserved for the city and the country", said monument supporter Janelle Weber.

"This is about showing the whole world that we as a city and as a people are able to acknowledge, understand, reconcile - and most importantly - choose a better future", Landrieu said in a statement.

Statues of Beauregard, Gen. Robert E. Lee and Confederate President Jefferson Davis are to be removed soon. The school, which closed amid rumors that the monument would be removed Sunday, will be open on Thursday but parents were directed to take an alternate route because roads in the area may still be closed.

Protests for and against monuments have increased since April 24 the city brought down the Battle of Liberty Place obelisk, which denoted a victory for a white supremacist group against the Reconstruction police force of New Orleans.

Because of threats and security risks, the city will not publicly disclose details for the next three removals. Take Em Down NOLA said the statues are symbols of white supremacy.

"The removal of these statues sends a clear and unequivocal message to the people of New Orleans and the nation: New Orleans celebrates our diversity, inclusion and tolerance", Mayor Landrieu said in a statement last month. One person held a sign that read, "Bout Time".

It is easily the most prominent of the statues: Lee standing, in uniform, arms crossed defiantly, looking toward the northern horizon from atop a roughly 60-foot-tall pedestal.

"I think what New Orleans is experiencing right now certainly is not unique", said Tulane Associate Professor of African and English studies Nghana Lewis. One of the workers dislodged the statue's feet from the base using a long flat tool.

The New Orleans monument that was taken down has been the subject of frequent vandalism in past years. Davis was the president of the Confederate States during the US Civil War, and a prosperous farmer with a cotton plantation and owned 74 slaves.

Lee and Beauregard were generals in the Confederate Army.

In Reese's court, Franklin Jones, an attorney for Marksbury, cited documents asserting that the independent, state-supervised board that oversees City Park owns the Beauregard statue and the tract of land on which it sits.

In 2015, the words "Black Lives Matter" were spray-painted on both sides of the monument's column, CNN affiliate WDAM-TV reported.
