Nigeria negotiating with Boko Haram for more Chibok releases

Released Friday, May 5, 2017, after three years in captivity, 82 Chibok schoolgirls, aged 16 to 18, were freed after negotiations and a controversial swap between internationally labeled "terrorist" group Boko Haram and the Nigerian government. She said "I am happy where I am".

"I believe in God and I trust in God that one day they will be released", Rebecca Yaga said and her long held belief appears to have paid as she said "I see now they begin their coming out now".

The Red Cross had on Monday explained its rolein freeing the girls.

Details of the negotiations that resulted in the release of the girls have not been disclosed by the federal government.

The government has released the names of those who were freed and families are travelling to the federal capital of Abuja to reunite with the girls.

Two other girls were found separately, in addition to those who escaped on the night of their abduction. Of the 276 girls kidnapped in April 2014, 113 are still missing.

Assuring the girls, Lai Mohammed said: "What is paramount to us is the release of the remaining girls".

Mediator and lawyer Zannah Mustapha said some of the abducted girls refused to be freed with the 82 girls last weekend, fuelling fears that they have been radicalised by the jihadists, and may feel afraid, ashamed or even too powerful to return to their old lives.

In a statement by Oby Ezekwesili and Aisha Yesufu, the co-conveners of the Bring Back Our Girls group, the BBOG said it had begun the verification of the identities of the rescued girls.

Testimony from former hostages in the brutal conflict has revealed that Boko Haram forced many women and young girls into marriage, and that rape and sexual violence were commonplace.

Thousands of people have been killed and about 1.6 million driven from their homes during the eight-year insurgency by Boko Haram.

"The President has made it clear that he will do everything within his powers to ensure the freedom and safe return of these girls and of all Boko Haram captives, we have started seeing the results, surely". And can the Chibok girls ever really be free?

"Government is preparing the girls to go back to school in September this year because they have lost so much academically", said presidency spokesman Garba Shehu. According to media reports, a few parents of the 21 previously released girls have information that their daughters are attending school, and are receiving medical and psychological support, while other parents have no information at all.
