No charges over USA police shooting of Alton Sterling

Police officers confront a group of police brutality protesters in Baton Rouge Louisiana

A person familiar with the Justice Department's decision disclosed it to The Associated Press on Tuesday. He keeps track of the number of officers charged with murder or manslaughter - federal or state charges.

Dozens of people gathered Tuesday outside the store where Sterling was shot and killed during a struggle with the two officers in July. "We're not gonna. let rage rule, because it's not over", he said. "So we want to be sure that everybody is where they need to be", McKneely said.

What we learned also today is that then, when Alton Sterling started to get up - he tried to rise - Blane Salamoni, prosecutors say, fired three more shots into his back.

MCEVERS: What's the family saying about that?

"We weren't able to provide manpower to those other events because those guys are obligated to be on the streets providing service to the citizens of Baton Rouge", McKneely said.

At the close of the investigation, the justice department said it found "insufficient evidence to support federal criminal charges" against either officer, in part because investigators could not determine whether Sterling was reaching for a gun at the time he was shot.

"There has already been a very thorough investigation where the type of work that the state police would do, had it been the principal agency investigating this matter from the outset, has already been done", the governor said.

"Most of the time, we are calling for federal intervention when the state can't actually do it", Robinson said.

Justin Bamberg, an attorney for some of Sterling's relatives, has said the family wanted an indictment. The post read "It's time Baton Rouge u didn't learn from the police killing n Baton Rouge". Prosecutors have known for months that it would be extremely hard to bring charges, particularly because Mr. The decision leaves Attorney General Jeff Landry to decide whether to pursue a case, but there already are signs that any state prosecution is a political minefield that the Republican might be seeking to avoid. Michael Slager, the former SC officer who was caught on video shooting a fleeing black man in the back, just pleaded guilty in federal court to deprivation of rights under the color of law.

Sandra Sterling, the aunt who raised Alton Sterling after his mother died, told local TV station WBRZ that the Justice Department decision stings - particularly after she and her relatives had been assured it would be worth the wait to ensure justice was achieved.

Last year, some athletes echoed protesters from the community who were frustrated by the death of Alton Sterling.

Sterling, 37, was selling CD's outside a convenience store when police received a call from someone that a black man wearing a red shirt and selling CD's had threatened him with a gun.

ALLEN: Well, this case goes to Jeff Landry, who's the attorney general here.

After a cellphone video of Sterling's final moments circulated on the Internet last summer, protests sprung up in the Baton Rouge area. The store's owner has said Sterling wasn't holding a gun during the shooting but he saw officers remove one from his pocket afterward.

"How can you believe the mindset of someone who walks up to someone and sticks a gun to his head?" the spokesman said.

When stories like Jordan's and Sterling's overlap, they not only subject our hearts to a double dose of sorrow and anguish, but they also foment cynicism and distrust of the justice system.
