Passenger dragged off United Airlines flight reaches settlement

Thomas Demetrio an attorney for Dr. David Dao speaks at a news conference in Chicago. On Thursday

United Airlines reached an out-of-court settlement Thursday with a doctor who was dragged off one of its flights after he refused to give up his seat.

The agreement included a provision that the amount will remain confidential, but we can guess that he probably-and rightfully-received a fair chunk of change.

In the news announcement, which circulated on Twitter, Dao's attorneys say United "has taken full responsibility for what happened on Flight 3411".

Calling his client "the unintended champion" for airline changes, Demetrio hoped other airlines would follow United's lead and reevaluate their procedures. "Mr. Munoz said he was going to do the right thing, and he has", Demetrio said about the company's CEO Oscar Munoz.

United issued its own brief statement Thursday, noting that it had reached an amicable settlement with Dao.

"We look forward to implementing the improvements we have announced, which will put our customers at the center of everything we do", the airline said in a statement. The settlement was negotiated by Dr. Dao's lawyers, Thomas A. Demetrio of Corboy & Demetrio and Stephen L. Golan of Golan Christie Taglia, and the legal representatives for United.

United has also unveiled a raft of policy changes in the wake of the incident, including offering passengers up to $10,000 to give up their seat on an overbooked flight.

United has said it will no longer call law enforcement to deny passengers boarding, nor would passengers who are already seated be required to give up their seats on overbooked flights.

United Airlines incident: What went wrong?

The airline had asked Dr Dao to leave his seat in order to allow four United staff members to get from Chicago to Louisville, Kentucky.

Charles Hobart, a United Airlines spokesman, confirmed the settlement, reports The New York Times. Airlines control how much they offer to pay, though they usually shell out a travel voucher toward a future flight or a gift card.

Without enough volunteers to take later flights, airlines are forced to involuntarily "bump" passengers off overbooked planes. "It was at that point that Dao, the report said, "... was physically removed from the aircraft", by the aviation security officers. United has since promised it will no longer use officers to forcibly remove paying customers from flights.
