Protester killed, AP journalist wounded in West Bank clash

He added that numerous 6,000 Palestinians held by Israel are in prisons within Israel and not in the West Bank or in Gaza, a contravention of the International Humanitarian Law; the prisoners' location discourages family visits because of the difficulty in obtaining permits to enter Israel.

The statement continued, "These prisoners are being held under harsh, inhumane conditions and being subjected to physical and mental ill-treatment, including torture, severe interrogations, intimidation and solitary confinement, and denied access to proper medical care and family visits".

Around 1,800 Palestinian prisoners Friday entered a critical phase after being on hunger strike for 33 consecutive days.

Police said they were also investigating an arson attack in another nearby Palestinian village that appeared to have been carried out by Jewish extremists.

Furthermore, leaders of the various political factions in Gaza united in the West Bank by holding a press conference and warning of a military confrontation with Israel if any of the hunger-strikers died.

Both the Red Crescent and the health ministry in Gaza said protesters were injured by tear gas, rubber bullets and live fire.

An Israeli settler opened fire on a group of Palestinians throwing rocks at his vehicle, killing one and injuring a journalist.

"Israel's establishing of West Bank settlement, including in East Jerusalem, has no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation of worldwide law and a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-state solution", the resolution reads.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) - Hundreds of Palestinian protesters clashed on Friday with Israeli forces at rallies across the West Bank in support of hunger-striking prisoners whose fast is now in its 33rd day.

The Israeli military says forces were sent to the scene to disperse a "riot".

"The Church seeks and encourages dialogue with all people, including Israelis, individuals and organizations, who recognize the need to end occupation and eliminate discrimination", the commission said.

May 19 Israeli troops arrested two Palestinians overnight on suspicion of involvement in a clash that led to a settler shooting dead a Palestinian in the West Bank, officials said today.
