Salvador Sobral Of Portugal Wins Eurovision Song Contest

Portuguese singer representing Portugal with the song "Amar Pelos Dios" Salvador Vilar Braamcamp Sobral aka Salvador Sobral holds the trophy as he celebrates on stage after winning the final of the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 Grand Final at the International Exhibition Centre in Kiev, on May 13, 2017.

Eurovision, which draws almost 200 million TV viewers each year, begins with a series of contests in each of the participating countries to determine who will go to the finals.

The song attained 758 points, ahead of Bulgaria in second on 615 points and Moldova in third on 374 points, and way up from last year's victor Jamala for Ukraine, which received 534 points.

Before Saturday's victory, Portugal had not won the Eurovision Song Contest.

In second place were Bulgaria while Moldova finished third.

"Not as the Eurovision victor".

The ceremony in the capital of ex-Soviet Ukraine began with a glittering light show as the contestants took bows on a stage lit up in the colours of their respective national flags.

Eurovision has wrapped up for another year, .

Salvador Sobral, 27, won with his ballad Amar Pelos Dois, which was written by his sister, BBC News reports.

In the late 1990s, however, Eurovision underwent some modernisation, ditching the traditional orchestra accompaniment to songs, introducing a free language rule to end the advantage for English-speaking countries and introducing a televote to allow the TV audience to register a preference.

Russian Federation is one of Eurovision's heavy hitters, tied with Sweden for the most top-five finishes this century. Not content with angering the contest organisers, the EBU (European Broadcasting Union), over their laissez-faire attitude towards the organisation of what is the world's biggest and most complex TV show, Ukraine then very publicly banned the girl who had been selected to sing for Russia because she had recently performed in Crimea, a disputed territory which once formed part of Ukraine but is now under Russian administration.

In response, Russia's state-owned Channel 1 television refused to broadcast the contest, replacing Saturday's final with a screening of the film "Alien".

Russian Federation has vowed that Samoilova will compete in 2018, putting #Ukraine in a tricky dilemma over whether to participate alongside her.

The Moscow-Kiev split was a headache for Eurovision's producer, the European Broadcasting Union, which strives to keep pop and politics separate. "Music is not fireworks, music is feeling, so let's try to really change this and bring music back". The union, however, has been criticized for not barring "1944" previous year, allowing Russia-Ukraine tensions to fester.

British viewers also raised their concerns that the UK's traditionally lacklustre garnering of votes from other countries would suffer even more this year thanks to the European Union referendum result.

The six-decade old song competition has served as the launchpad for a string of high-profile artists, notably ABBA, who won in 1974 with Waterloo, Celine Dion, who won with Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi in 1988 and Brotherhood of Man, who won in 1976 with Save All Your Kisses For Me.
