The L.A. Times says the duo could be facing misdemeanor trespassing charges and fines.

As if climbing the iconic structure wasn't enough, the duo also chose to dangle from the cables and hang off the edge of one of the towers.

"I don't want to say too much about how we got past security".

The daredevil said he always wanted to scale the span, so during Easter break in early April he and his partner, who goes by the pseudonym Tommy Rector - who is in his early 20s - flew to San Francisco to make the climb.

According to authorities, the bridge was not damaged by the climbers, but the fact that this was able to occur at all - without anyone finding out about it for more than a month - is definitely a concern. They were on the bridge for about an hour, he said.

"The Golden Gate Bridge is not an amusement park ride", he said, adding that the two men climbed the structure's vertical suspender ropes without any harnesses or fall protection.

Before performing a stunt, he said, they made sure the road was clear.

A YouTube video of a daring stunt on the Golden Gate Bridge is going viral.

Teatime said that while the act is illegal, it is a must-do for explorers as it is has an fantastic view and is also the tallest structure in the US.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District said changes to bridge security are now being implemented.

The daredevils said they would be willing to consult with officials on how to improve security.

"Their path of travel didn't trigger an alarm", Clemens said.

On Tuesday, Golden Gate Bridge General Manager Dennis Mulligan said officials were not aware of the incident until it was posted online and they received a link, KTVU reported.

"I want to assure you the bridge is safe", said bridge Capt. Lisa Locati.

The bridge district did not know about the climb when it happened, and changes are underway in the "security infrastructure" and monitoring of the cameras and patrolling on the bridge, Clemens said. "As long as we are not hurting anyone, I don't see anything wrong with it".

Locati said the bridge's security system was "not created to protect thrill-seekers from harming themselves".
