Trump Dismisses Reports on Kushner, Leaks as 'Fake News'

Mr Trump had earlier taken to Twitter to vent his frustrations with the "fake news media". The FBI and separate congressional committees are conducting investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether any Trump associates were involved.

Under the planned shakeup, White House Press secretary Sean Spicer would take a diminished public role, while Mr. Trump would take more opportunities to engage directly with his supporters via campaign rallies, social media appearances such as Facebook Live videos, and interviews with friendly news organisations, the NYT reported.

Current and former US officials said Mr. Kushner's activities, like those of many others around Mr. Trump, are under scrutiny as part of the investigation. But they did not dismiss the idea that the administration would go outside normal US government and diplomatic channels for communications with other countries.

"We have back-channel communications with a number, any number of countries, no I would not be concerned about it", said McMaster.

Mr Kelly, the homeland security secretary, carried the same message on Sunday.

"It's both normal in my opinion and acceptable", he told ABC News on Sunday.

Kelly told This Week co-anchor Martha Raddatz on Sunday that with countries such as Russian Federation that are not allies of the US, any means of communication is a "good thing". Plus, the obvious question arises about who exactly Kushner wanted to hide his communications from, considering he asked the Russians to establish the backchannel and not his own government. "But I do think there ought to be a review of his security clearance to find out whether he was truthful, whether he was candid".

Democrats have repeatedly requested that Kushner's security clearance be retracted until the investigation is complete.

Kushner sought Kremlin back channel via Russian ambassador:...

... According to CNN, Kushner was working with former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn in hopes of sharing military operations in Syria with the Russians.

"With the avalanche of media attention to 'Russiagate, ' it's mindboggling why Kushner would hide this info instead of disclosing it and avoiding a media firestorm", former attorney Dean Obeidallah told CNN.

The Washington Post reports the White House plans to take more aggressive action to combat the growing scandal surrounding alleged contacts between Trump associates and Russian Federation.

The White House did not acknowledge the meeting or Kushner's attendance until March.

During his first run for the White House, then-candidate Obama said he'd meet with foreign leaders of countries who are enemies to America without preconditions.

United States media outlets and officials have repeatedly accused members of Trump's team of having contacts with Russian Federation, alleging that Moscow used these contacts for its own ends and even meddled in the U.S. 2016 presidential election.

The president then declared his nine-day trip overseas "a great success for America" before launching into a number of posts criticizing leaks and anonymous sourcing, following another week of bombshell Russia-related reports.

"I don't trust this story as far as I can throw it", Senator Lindsey Graham told CNN.
