Trump Threatens Fired FBI Director Comey With 'Tapes'

The president's decision to fire Comey came as the FBI director was heading an investigation into allegations of Russian interference in the United States election, including claims of involvement by Trump's aides.

"In fact, when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said, 'You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won, '" he told NBC.

Mr Trump's outburst came amid growing scrutiny over the White House's account of how Mr Comey was sacked, particularly its initial claim that Mr Trump had only fired him on the recommendation of his new deputy attorney-general Rod Rosenstein - a claim that Mr Trump laid out in his letter of dismissal.

"For a President who baselessly accused his predecessor (Barack Obama) of illegally wiretapping him, that Mr. Trump would suggest that he, himself, may have engaged in such conduct is staggering", Schiff said in a statement. "I love the FBI", Trump said, when asked whether firing Comey had anything to do with an ongoing probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

A third of Americans say that Trump made the right decision, the poll finds, while 34 percent say he made the wrong decision.

Comey's dismissal stunned lawmakers, roiled Washington politics, and deepened questions about Trump's administration and the independence of USA law-enforcement agencies from political pressure.

Trump said he asked Comey "if it's possible, would you let me know, am I under investigation?" Adam Schiff of California, said that Trump should hand over any such tapes to lawmakers - or publicly admit none actually exist.

The tweet immediately conjured up thoughts of former President Richard Nixon, who resigned during the Watergate scandal and infamously recorded conversations that helped lead to his decision to step down. "He didn't even want the rank and file at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to know about it". In his interview with NBC, Trump acknowledged he was the one who pressed Comey on the Trump-Russia probe during a phone call. The HuffPost/YouGov and Politico/Morning Consult polls gave people an option to say that they weren't sure.

The New York Times first reported Thursday night that Trump demanded during the dinner that Comey declare his loyalty to the president, and that Comey declined.

"But I said to myself I might even lengthen out the investigation. We'll see what happens", he said.

As for Trump's suggestion Comey requested a dinner meeting because he wanted to save his job at the FBI, Gomez doesn't buy that either. If Comey did indeed refuse to pledge loyalty to Trump, he was correct for doing so; if Trump did indeed fire Comey because he was insufficiently loyal, he violated the spirit of the Constitution by doing so. Journalists will find it hard not to draw connections between the Russian Federation probe and the Trump administration's intensified contacts with Russian Federation.
