Trump to announce federal court nominees

In an effort to remake the nation's judiciary with conservative justices, Trump is expected to announce 10 federal court nominees on Monday.

. According to the senior administration official, they are Justice Joan Larsen of the Michigan Supreme Court and Justice David Stras of the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Trump will also name several additional nominees to the federal appeals court, along with a handful of federal district court nominees.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said each nominee was chosen "for their deep knowledge of the law" and commitment to the Constitution.

Trump will need a minimum of 51 votes to confirm his judicial nominees in the Senate - a feat made easier by Senate Democrats' decision to trigger the so-called "nuclear option" in 2013 to eliminate the filibuster for all nominations to the lower federal courts.

Building off his highly successful appointment of Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, Fox News reported that Trump has a strong list of constitutional conservatives that he's ready to announce.

While the court of appeals tends to have a lower public profile, its role in adjudicating numerous orders and laws put forth by this administration will be significant. But while a revised ban was later released, that too was blocked by the courts.

It would take congressional action to break up the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Larsen, a former professor at the University of Michigan law school, has served on the Michigan Supreme Court bench since November 2015 and has written majority opinions in four cases.
